Ashdoc's movie review---Special 26

Post by ashdoc on Wed Feb 13, 2013 11:20 pm

When the audience shamelessly cheers for the crooks in a movie instead
of the policemen you know that the director has a winner on his hands ;
and that what the audience that I was seeing the movie with was
doing---clapping and cheering every time the crooks fooled the police .
Getting the audience to sympathise for law beakers instead of law
protectors in an art only few movie makers have mastered , but this is
directed by the director of ' A Wednesday ' ; so I was not surprised .

The film ( supposed to be based on real life events ) shows a gang of
crooks pretending to a CBI officers and conducting raids on rich people
awash with with black money , and taking away their money---taking full
advantage of the fact that the people robbed wont complain because the
fact that they have black money would get exposed . As they get sucess
their ambition grows and they plan ever bigger heists---the last and
biggest one requiring no less than 26 participants ( the so called '
special 26 ' )

The era of 1987 , when the events took place , is well created with old
Maruti 800 and Contessa cars , posters of Sridevi's Nagina movie ( which
was released in 1987 ) , cricket matches in Sharjah ( with Sunil
Gavaskar batting ) shown .

The surprise of the movie is the acting of Akshay Kumar , whom I had
earlier dismissed as a non actor and whose movies I generally give a
miss . He puts a stellar show of robust acting---so maybe after decades
in Bollywood you do learn some acting skills....

So do the police catch the criminals ( to the chagrin of the audience
which would decisively not want them to be caught ) , or they dont ??

Go watch the movie for that....

This is a short review because I do not want to reveal too much of the
suspense , and longer reviews would mean revealing the story....

Verdict---entertaining .

I watched this movie last weekend. I liked the period setting -- it seemed like they paid a lot of attention to detail in this regard. The movie was a tad too long, with some superfluous song-and-dance routines. It turned out to be surprisingly good, given my low expectations about any new Bollywood release. I went only because of the connection to "A Wednesday" which I had loved. Anupam Kher overacted as usual, but Akshay Kumar actually acted in some parts of the movie. Manoj Bajpai did a good job. There was a woman who plays Akshay's girlfriend. The movie would have been better off without her in it, and even better without her character. Overall, worth watching for its surprise ending.
