Wolverine the X man---a prisoner of his past and living the rough life somewhere in the wilderness....

Prisoner of his past because he has been forced to kill a woman he dearly loved.....
......And dreams of her calling him to be with her to lie in eternal peace keep recurring to him , waking him at night repeatedly---beckoning him to heaven , if there is such a place.....

And on earth too , his past never leaves him.....

For way back in 1945 he had saved a Japanese soldier called Yashida from the Nagasaki atomic bomb.....

And now Yashida has become a big shot , and has sent a young woman called Yukio to bring Logan ( Wolverine ) to him---to give up his powers to Yashida , something that Logan refuses.....

But Yashida is on his deathbed and next day Logan is called to his funeral where he takes upon himself to protect Yashida's lovely daughter Mariko from people hellbent on harming her---for Yashida has willed his entire fortune to Mariko bypassing his jealous son....

So Wolverine is once again drawn into the same task that superheros are born for ; something that he wanted to leave---that of protecting vulnerable people from danger , except that the person he has to protect this time is feminine and lovely and frail and delicate and therefore has the potential of making the task of protecting oh so delicious.....

But the Wolverine is in great pain---pain of mind and soul rather that that of body.....
......And so throughout the film he sticks to his task with grim thoroughness rather than with pleasure....
But he is determined to carry out his task rentlessly.....

The forces ranged against him are formidable.....

There is a beautiful blonde mutant viper who has injected him with a robotic parasite which prevents healing of his wounds unlike before....

There is Yashida's son who sends bad people to attack him and Mariko....

And Mariko's former lover has his own set of ninja warriors whom he sends to separate Mariko from him---something that Logan ( Wolverine ) is loathe to let happen because he has now become physically intimate with the lissome Mariko....

Also there is a machine like creature called silver samurai which can cut of Wolverines claws with a sword.....

But worst of all , Yukio who was sent by Yashida to bring him and has mutant power to foresee people's deaths tells him that she has seen his death....

Wolverine has to triumph against all the odds....

And he has to fight his own demons which take the form of the recurring visons of the woman he loved and lost....

So does he manage to fight and beat both the inner and outer demons ?? Watch the movie for that....

Hugh Jackman plays the role of Wolverine to near perfection as he faces his myriad enemies---he really looks and acts the part....

......And the setting of the film in Japan gives an exotic feel even though Japan is a developed country---all bowing before others and kimono clad ladies and samurai swords and ninja warriors with deadly arrows...

Fights are well orchestrated especially the one on the top of a bullet train....

But the 3D effects dont work much---I well could have been watching a 2D film.....

In the end I felt the twists and turns were a little more than necessary.....

But still it was not a unworthy watch.....

Verdict---not fantastic but still entertaining .
