English spreading rapidly throughout Uttar Pradesh. Employers prefer UPites to other NIs because they do not have accent problems Empty English spreading rapidly throughout Uttar Pradesh. Employers prefer UPites to other NIs because they do not have accent problems

Even as Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav called for a ban on MPs speaking English in Parliament, stating that countries which use their mother tongue are more developed, the popularity of adult English language classes has been rapidly expanding beyond big cities and industrial townships to all corners of Uttar Pradesh.

People from different walks of life are taking these classes. In Khalilabad, factory workers, farmers as well as their children have enrolled while in Etawah, businessmen are learning the nuances of 'English life' to leave a better impression on their clients. Women students are up too, and include homemakers wanting to learn the language to help their children with homework, and join in the conversation with their husbands at official gatherings.

Amod Kumar Bharadwaj, chief executive officer of AIEL, a private venture that has opened centres in Khalilabad and Etawah, says, "We already have a marked presence in 90% of UP districts. But now we have moved to the peri-urban parts of these districts." He claims that the centre has not had to conduct any marketing campaigns about the benefits of the classes in these peri-urban areas, like they did a few years earlier. "Students make a beeline without much effort on our part," Bharadwaj says. The institute today has over 150 centres across UP, including districts which fare poorly on various human development indicators like Ambedkarnagar, Bahraich, Balrmpur, Banda, Barabamki, Basti, Badaun, Etah, Hardoi, Hamirpur, Jaunpur, Kushinagar and Lakhimpur Khiri, among others.

Bharadwaj says the demand for classes is significantly higher in UP, compared to other neighboring states like Punjab, Haryana and Uttarakhand. "Employers prefer to hire people from UP as they do not have any accent problems," he says.
