So why was #StopHindiImposition trending on Independence Day? - See more at: http://www.thenewsminute.com/article/so-why-was-stophindiimposition-trending-independence-day-33202#sthash.47e5mEfJ.CUN2s9Yl.dpuf

As India woke up to Independence Day and PM Narendra Modi’s address from New Delhi on Saturday morning, Twitter was on a different beat, bringing linguistic plurality into focus with #StopHindiImposition trending.
But why the hashtag on Independence Day? The hashtag was actually the result of a campaign by a Facebook community from Bengaluru titled Promote Linguistic Equality (PLE) and had started trending early on Saturday morning...

From the Hindu

Demand to declare 22 languages as official languages of India

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi was making his Independence Day speech in Hindi on Saturday, hundreds of tech-savvy Indians took to Twitter to protest against how the Central governments have historically privileged Hindi over other Indian languages, by sending out pointed tweets criticising what they alleged as India’s flawed language policy.
This campaign was organised by members of Facebook advocacy group, Promote Linguistic Equality, to protest and raise awareness of how non-Hindi States are often coerced into using Hindi. For several hours on Saturday, #StopHindiImposition was a trending topic in many of the non-Hindi cities.
Asked why Independence Day was hand-picked to organise this protest, Prasanna LM, a main organiser of the campaign and a student, said, “We felt that August 15 would be the best day to highlight the fact that Indians can enjoy true independence only when all Indians and their languages are given equal status. Otherwise, non-Hindi speakers will remain as second class citizens. We demand that all 22 languages of union be declared as official languages under the 8th Schedule of the Constitution,” he said.
The campaign had the participation of hundreds of social media users who share the same demand.
Speaking about how the campaign was organised, Vishal V Navekar said, “We prepared a database of tweets in different languages and asked our members to tweet them using the hashtag #StopHindiImposition,” he said.
The Twitterati also kick-started a debate on issues faced by non-Hindi speakers.

From IBNLIVE

Indians tweet up for linguistic equality and against Hindi imposition

A common man in Karnataka visiting a bank/post office in any part of his own state for any transactions, will have to face a language barrier. From application forms to cheques, display panels and ATMs, Hindi and English languages find place but the language of the people of the land is largely ignored. Indian Railways operating within Karnataka does not provide basic services like passenger tickets and safety information in Kannada, but Hindi and English are used everywhere. The passport of an Indian carries Hindi/English in place of individual's own language.
The root cause of all these problems is the fact that only Hindi and English are given official status in the Indian Union. Non-Hindi speakers are treated as second-grade citizens in their own land by the Union government. This form of discrimination meted out towards non-Hindi speakers has brought millions of Indians to question as why can't we have linguistic equality in India? A common interest group which pondered around this question formed an online community called "Promote Linguistic Equality (PLE)" in Facebook in the year 2013. The group now has more than 8,000 members hailing from all parts of India. This Independence day, several members of the PLE group decided to highlight this issue on Twitter using the hashtag "#StopHindiImposition". People from across India actively responded in this TweetUp contributing to thousands of tweets under this hashtag. Indians from various linguistic communities in India are voicing for the same cause - "Promote Linguistic Equality".
The Union government can address this issue of linguistic inequality by declaring all 22 schedules languages as the Official languages of the Indian Union. That way the promises made in the preamble of the Indian Constitution would also be honoured and democracy would prevail in its truest spirit.

THAT is a stretch -- poetic license allowed. ok it was trending for a couple of hours BUT NOT FOR THE WHOLE DAY as you had made it out to be. it was NOT trending at around noon when i posted. THE TREND RAN OUT OF "GAS."

making all 22 languages official is idiotic...bcz every year there will be demand to include more and more.

Make English the only official language. No favoritism as it will be a phoren language for almost all Indians. It will make the a few NE Indians feel happy and more Indian than others.

Hindi being the language spoken by most Indians does not wash. That becomes the imposition of majority wish on minority. This goes against the ethos of Indianism which always is subservient to the Minorities.

So English it should be.

Actually European Union has 24 official languages.. Indian Union is equally or more diverse than European Union. With the technology we have now this is no big deal.

Getting services from the government in his/her language is the most basic fundamental right in a democracy.

there is no need for any official language. it's not difficult to translate from one language to another, especially using computers.

making hindi an official language is not much use to hindi speakers either because a large % of them - about 35% in bihar - cannot read.

a special reason for NOT making hindi a national language: hindi speakers have proved themselves, in the past, to be incapable of making decisions for public benefit; their major objective is to gain an unfair advantage over the non-hindi-speaking peoples of india.

illiterate northindians should therefore have as little control over language policy in india as possible, especially since none is needed.

a special reason fot NOT making english an official language of india: so that people like uppusaamy, bimaru brie, penius711, and veeraraghavan uthamaselvan would use their native languages more often, and would not feel obliged to  subject the rest of us innocent bystanders to the pain of decoding their english.

correction (see bold and red text above):   "an official language," not "a national language."

you want to teach me history and geography of india? what does history and geography have to do with the fact that 60% of india's population speaks hindi? it was you who said that south indians have shrunken lullis (https://such.forumotion.com/t32773-11-billion-people-by-2100-india-will-be-the-most-populous-country#202335) or something something -- does it not make better sense to impose hindi on an a population that will quickly become marginal and cede to a rapidly expanding hindi speaking population? the mountains and oceans will come in way?

"As long as Tamil Nadu is part of India, Hindi will be imposed on the Tamil people irrespective of who is in power in New Delhi or who is in power in Tamil Nadu." Chisel these words on a rock and set that rock in front of the Tamil Nadu State Assembly. - Dr. Thanjai Nalankilli

KV,

This time the effort is being spearheaded by Kannadiga youth.

Due to the economic migrants from the Hindi belt (and people who drank the "national language cool aid) and their brash behavior, local Kannadigas have finally realized and now starting to agitate against the second class citizenship meted out to all but Hindians.

very cute ponni, but, you see ponni, this "movement" is a farce. it is not a movement. from fb to twitter to ndtv to ... instagram, whaatsapp, youtube. jasmine revolution?

ponni there is no ground support. no kannadiga worth his salt gives a fuck as such, but, yes, it's all makes for good "fun" and frolic.

i will be a happy customer to see you attaining your goal, for, in all honesty:

- i do not give a fuck for hindi;
- i believe indians should learn english mandatorily;
- i am amused by the logic of your likes as to why hindi should not be imposed -- logic demands it should be.

Watch for fun.
hahahahahahahaah! thanks for posting this!

ashok chaKradhar (seeing him after decades -- last i met him was at a kavi sammelan organized by my father) - mein hindi me dheere dheere bol raha hun jaise jin logon ko hindi nahi aati wo bhi samajh payen.

with such attitudes, only a bloody rebellion can stop hindi imposition!

I welcome attitudes like that from Hindian idiots. It will push the otherwise cool-aid drinking , nationalist non Hindians towards our side.

Eventually we will attain our goal.
very cute ponni, but, you see ponni, this "movement" is a farce. it is not a movement. from fb to twitter to ndtv to ... instagram, whaatsapp, youtube. jasmine revolution?

Dude, do not underestimate, Brits thought in 1905 that they would be ruling India for a long time. There are few minor disturbances to their rule from fringe groups. But within 50 years they are forced to go out.

What is starting as few gruntled voices could become major too.

Actually European Union has 24 official languages.. Indian Union is equally or more diverse than European Union. With the technology we have now this is no big deal.

Getting services from the government in his/her language is the most basic fundamental right in a democracy.
WHAT????????????? india is now europe? is there a language like hindi in europe spoken by 60% of the population?

Not just now, The region what we call as India is always much more diverse than Europe. Read history and geography.
It is futile arguing with hindi fanatics, stupids and northindians. A majority of them belong to all the three categories.
is bimaru brie not your "bhayya" anymore? is it ever awkward to be caught being opportunistic? you may want to discuss opportunism with uppusaamy.
You still don't get it, do you?
The usage of "bhaiyya" was to highlight a point that your reading skills are now below that of the "bimaru brie".
What a fall?
Go back to that thread and read again carefully.
