Meru
"Meru is a 2015 documentary film chronicling the first ascent of the "Shark's Fin" route on Meru Peak in the Indian Himalayas"....wiki
I am no flim critic like ashdoc, so my review about the movie in one sentence, as they say in telugu, 'idi choodaka pote mee bratuku wastu' (your life is a waste if you don't watch this). I really mean it!
The documentary/movie is about three super human daredevil mountaineers (Conrad, Jimmy and Renan) climbing the Meru peak for the first time in human history (note: not mythology). It was filmed as they ventured, unlike 'Into thin air'. I don't know how they did it. 'Technology', says hubby. An awesome documentary which portrays human strength, determination, stamina, and camaraderie in its highest form and of course, the CRAZINESS...the inborn, irresistible craziness and drive that gives them all this strength, stamina and the courage to even die in the process. It's an awesome movie. Do watch it! I watched it through Amazon. If you are an Amazon prime member, utilize it. I am going to watch it again with my boys...and probably will watch it again and again and again...
PS: After watching the movie, the bell rang in my head. 'Meru parvatam' I heard that before, probably in the mythology. So i google and there it was! It was the mountain that the five pandavas and Draupadi tried to climb at the fag end of their lives to reach the peak, from where they could enter the gates of heaven. It was supposed to be an extremely tough climb and only the ones with great character would reach the peak. Draupadi, though a pativrata, dies first at the foothills of the mountain. Reason? Though she was pampered by five super macho hubbies (oh well...they were sissy at times), she coveted Karna. Jeez@her greed! Anyway, the other brothers die one by one according to their sins. Finally, it is Yudhistira who reaches the peak, along with a dog who faithfully follows him. The dog is actually one of the devas who tries to test the integrity of Yudhi. At the peak, Yama meets him, applauds him but says that he can only allow him(Yudhistira) into the heaven, but not the dog. Yudhistira says that he ain't going without the dog and refuses to go. That's character! He passes the test and is taken into heaven. Anyway the point is, even in the mythology, it is written how tough it is to reach the peak of mount Meru. And now these guys did it and you have a chance to watch it! So do watch it!

from what I remember draupadi's sin was the she was partial towards Arjun among all her husbands, loved him more when she should have loved all 5 equally.

PS: If I attempt to climb Meru, i would die even before reaching the foothills of the mountain. Right now, i have a crush on Conrad. What an amazing guy! The other two are awesome too, but they are much younger. Can't have crush on them no?

It's also described as the abode of Brahma, as the center of the Universe, etc

hahaha.. with that feminine kind of makeup, eyeliner forking out of the corner of the eyes and especially the lipstick, he was very popular with women I gather. interestingly, MGR too. women liked them both because of that effeminate makeup, i am convinced. I am not going to dig too much into this as to what it implies and all, if you know what I mean

LOL@'effeminate makeup' observation.
Apparently, Haranath was more of a heartthrob of those decades. Later on Shobhan Babu took his place.

Re: Meru
g_k, with DVS Karna (Daana Veera Shoora Karna), where NTR played triple roles as Karna, Duryodhana and Krishna, he changed the images of Karna and Duryodhana totally. Pandavas were portrayed as the bad guys while Duryodhana was fine and Karna was the super hero with all the admirable qualities. For decades after this, telugus loved Karna with all their hearts. The perception that Draupadi coveted Karna probably originated from here. That's what Smarta suggested, i guess.garam_kuta wrote:smArtha wrote:Kinnera wrote:From what i heard, she had hots for Karna.Meghna Mathur wrote:from what I remember draupadi's sin was the she was partial towards Arjun among all her husbands, loved him more when she should have loved all 5 equally.

ah, OK. makes sense. I wasn't aware of this.
In fact, I got side tracked. It is a fascinating issue. I wanted to mention that Draupadhi loved Bheema the most I believe. Simpler guy, direct and expressed his emotions straight without any hidden agenda and therefore trustworthy and beyond betrayal. I forget where I read this, but will try & see whether I can retrieve that for you.

Re: Meru
Makes sense@Draupadi loving Bheema more. Bheema was the one who protested strongly when she was being disrobed, while the other brothers just looked away. He was the one who vowed to break open Dushasana's (Duryodhana's brother who tried to disrobe her) thighs and drink in blood in revenge for Draupadi's humiliation. And he fulfills his promise.garam_kuta wrote:Kinnera wrote:g_k, with DVS Karna (Daana Veera Shoora Karna), where NTR played triple roles as Karna, Duryodhana and Krishna, he changed the images of Karna and Duryodhana totally. Also, he was the one who protected her from Keechaka (king Virata's BIL) killed him and saved her honor.
A woman would love the man who'd protect her, stand up for her bravely and saves her honor, not the effeminate guys who give excuses and not get agitated enough when their woman is insulted. It's but natural if Draupadi loved Bheema more. Women love strong macho guys with paurusham, not sissies
