Whoever translated it ought to be whacked severely across the bums. 'Sarndhor' does not means dependent. It means kin (friends and family).

I see the problem -- some genius put it on google translate and went to town with it.

Kamal suffered a quite a bit due to JJ and her policies/governance was criticized by Kamal (appropriate). But his tweet is carefully worded and would say aptly but wrongly translated/understood.

kinda funny to be consoling kin when she had none. Acknowledging her appropriately as the departed leader of the state would have kept him well under the radar.

Looks like there are a lot of Rashmuns out there. Having an interest but with half-baked insights into Tamil vocabulary.

Kith and kin is a more appropriate translation. He doesn't even make a reference to her. He starts the tweet with sArndhOr (kith and kin). I don't know if it is the limitation of characters (I didn't count), but a clear comment would have been Jayalalitha-vin sArndhOr (Jayalalitha's kith and kin). Instead he starts rather baldly with the word sArndhOr.

He knew what he was doing. He wanted to offer sympathy without joining the crowd of toadies. Regardless of his abilities as an actor (prone to melodrama IMO), his command of Tamil and facility with the language is unquestionable. Way better than his long term rival Rajanikanth who often mumbles and swallows words.

He does not need to ack her as a leader of respect (as for him) but at the same time he offered his condolences to those who blindly worshipped her. I would still say what he said is appropriate and he is good at Tamil and the translation escalated it more -vely.

blind worshippers != kith and kin... lol looks like you are also interpreting it the same way as the original incorrect translation.

anyhoos, when someone is a leader with a big following, their own family or friends is very small in comparison. Guess the protocol would still be to ack the importance of their status and move on. But I am no expert on protocols.

He has had a difficult history with her. I am impressed that he hasn't become all sentimental like her DMK rivals who spent a lifetime bashing her only to be reduced to a puddle of tears after her death. More dignified.

yeah, guess given their history, no matter what he said, it would have been scrutinized in layers.

Whatever their history may be, it may have been good to say something more and thoughtful..or say nothing at all, when Kamal has no shortage of words..can talk for hours about anything, and listen to people praising him for hours!

I used to admire American politicians for being gracious to their opponents (whether it is on the local level or national level) after bitter elections and political fights. Most of them attend funeral services of their political rivals..and are so kind towards the bereaved families. Thought Indian politicians could be more like them..now it seems to be the opposite here!

Historically, great leaders were almost always grudgingly respectful towards "worthy long time opponents"..they may appear to be angry in public and even go to war with them..but, on a personal level, they could perhaps feel they have many things in common- understand the burdens of leadership and all that comes with it. When one of the old enemies dies, there were perhaps mixed feelings towards them..because they are no longer around to kick, beat or destroy them!

Nice to see how Stalin has behaved, respectful and measured in his words and actions.Kudos to him! He has influenced the DMK supporters to be respectful and restrained..they are showering her with tributes (!)..well, it will be over when the mourning is over..and the gloves will come off..especially against Pannerselvam or Sasikala..they don't seem like worthy opponents..not even close:)

Jayalalitha for all the rivalry, tried sometimes too..she had some fondness for Stalin, had none towards his father. Karunanidhi seems to still consider MGR his only worthy opponent (if anyone has seen the movie "Iruvar"..it's interesting..somewhat based on their relationship).

"saarnthor" is neither dependents nor kith and kin.

The best English translation is "those who were on her side". In the context of Jayalalitha it means those who supported her or those who sided with her.

sArnthOr comes from the word sErnthOr. sEr means join. Example join a political party

No it doesn't. sArndha means aligned or associated with. For example in Tamil
literary tradition geography plays an important role. Land types are divided into neithal, kurunji, marutham, and pAlai. neithal for example is described as 'kadalum, kadal sArndha idamum', i.e. oceans and the lands associated with oceans, kurunji as 'malaiyum, malai sArndha idamum', i.e. mountains and lands associated with mountains and so on. sArndha therefore means 'associated with'. sErndha has a different etymology. This is why I thought kith and kin is a reasonable interpretation.

Missed mullai.

Neithal -- ocean
Mullai -- forest
Kurunji -- mountains
Marutham -- lakes and arable land
pAlai -- desert.

Actually, your example makes my point.

'kadalum, kadal sArndha idamum', -  ocean and the land by the side of ocean.

It makes in the sense of JL. SArnthOr - those on the side of JL (or JL supporters)
