It has been argued that the earliest known images of Shiva, or the prototype of Shiva, did not have a singular feature we associate with Shiva: the snake around his neck. It is argued that the snake was later placed around his neck to absorb tribals with the snake totem into hinduism. Similarly Nandi was associated with Shiva to absorb tribals with the bull totem into hinduism.

Arguing along the same lines, the creators of the Shiva iconography may have conceptualized Shiva's ganas (like Bhringin, Kusumanda, etc.) to represent assorted tribals with the objective of absorbing all of them into the Hindu fold.
