"... even mother's Gotra must be taken into consideration." (Sulekha blog on 'inbreeding')

My comment to the above:

There is something related to that (maternal lineage / connection), just like gotra (paternal lineage / connection), taken into consideration at the time of match making. The maternal lineage / connection in our area (H.P.) is called "naarsingh", implying that the daughter, her mother, her maternal grandmother, maternal great-grandmother etc. have the same "naarsingh" (i.e. originating from the same woman / family).

For deciding a marriage between a young man and a young woman, they used not only to look for not having the same "gotra" (paternal relationship) for a number of generations (3 or 4) but also not having the same "naarsingh" (maternal connection) for 3 or 4 generations.

What is noteworthy that ancients, even without proper knowledge of current forms of genetics, had long ago made the important observation that marital unions among close relatives could be a factor in mental and physical problems to the offspring, thus setting up a scheme to shun marriages between blood relatives (having the same “gotra” (paternal link) and “naarsingh” (maternal link), for immediately preceding 3 or 4 generations).
