Kashmiri-Tamil synthesis (NI-SI synthesis)

Post by Rashmun on Fri Jun 16, 2017 10:35 am

There is a branch of Hindu philosophy called Kashmir Shaivism. It originated in Kashmir but ultimately it died out in Kashmir for obvious reasons which I need not go into. However, this same Kashmir Shaivism was miraculously preserved by people in Tamil Nadu who accepted this philosophy.

The famous Nataraja temple at Chidambaram became the most prominent center of Kashmir Shaivism.

One last point: Perhaps the most famous exponent of Kashmir Shaivism was a Kashmiri called Abhinavgupta. Now, Abhinavgupta had a Tamil disciple called Govindaraj. It is fortunate that some of the writings of Govindaraj about Abhinavgupta have survived the ravages of Time.
