Russian money-laundering case abruptly settled Empty Russian money-laundering case abruptly settled

Preet Bharara was overseeing the investigation into a Russian money-laundering operation buying up luxury real estate in New York. He was fired by Trump. The case was supposed to go to trial on Monday, May 15. On the evening of Friday, May 12, the same federal prosecutor's office settled the case. At the time, this abrupt settlement, with no acknowledgement of wrongdoing and for less than half the value of the acquired property, raised lots of red flags.
http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/13/world/prevezon-settlement/index.html wrote:"What most concerns me is: Has there been any political pressure applied in this?" asked Louise Shelley, an illicit finance expert who was set to testify in support of the US government on Tuesday.

Shelley — who founded George Mason University's Terrorism, Transnational Crime and Corruption Center — said the alleged money launderers got off easy.

"I think they won something. There's no recognition of wrongdoing," she said.

The US Attorney's office did not respond to CNN's request for comment.

Now, in a very curious turn of events, it emerges that Prevezon was represented by Natalia Veselnitskaya, the same lawyer who met Trump Jr., Manafort and Kushner last June.
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/11/world/europe/natalia-veselnitskaya-donald-trump-jr-russian-lawyer.html wrote:The family’s trust in Ms. Veselnitskaya was rewarded in May, when she helped Denis P. Katsyv, Pyotr’s son, fight the money laundering claims in New York brought by the Manhattan federal prosecutor at the time, Preet Bharara. Mr. Bharara tangled with Ms. Veselnitskaya several times and protested at one point that she had been charging the government for a $995-a-night room at the Plaza Hotel.

The case was settled two months after Mr. Bharara was dismissed by President Trump.

Bharara seems to be having a lot of fun on his Twitter page.
