The premise of "make America great again" is that America used to be great and it is no longer great. The predisent has cleverly avoided articulating exactly how far back into the past we wants to take America. Not so much the pedophile candidate he endorsed for the Senate race in Alabama, Roy Moore:

https://www.vox.com/platform/amp/policy-and-politics/2017/12/7/16748038/roy-moore-slavery-america-great wrote:"I think it was great at the time when families were united — even though we had slavery — they cared for one another. … Our families were strong, our country had a direction."

He thinks America was great in the 1850s. I guess with time, the Republican party is getting more and more like the Taliban in its aspirations to take society backwards.
