A small temple in Kerala witnessed a historic change last week when Yedu Krishnan took charge as its head priest — the first Dalit, or member of Hinduism’s lowest castes, to be appointed to such a post in the state.

Marichamy, a first non-Brahmin to come out of a state-run archaka training centre, is a happy man.

The Supreme Court verdict on the entry of women of all ages in the Sabarimala hill shrine in Kerala has rekindled the hopes of non-Brahmin priests to enter the sanctum sanctorum of one of the most sought-after temples in the state.

in this era of dying traditions, people should be happy someone is fighting to keep the job, be it a dalit, be it a woman, be it straight, be it gay. They are taking the religion forward, and helping people stay in touch with it. Or else, it will all die out like the old Roman culture did
