It probably is similar to any other writing under a continuous line, from left to right or vice versa, used in the past for maintaining the integrity of the text and message, in case the writing surface distorted or broke / fragmented over time, which probably happened often when people used papyrus, clay and crude wood tablets for writing. The continuous line at the top of text would come in handy to keep track of words / letters which moved up, down or sideways over time (with distorting or disintegrating writing surface), and it was the ingenious way for our ancestors to put the written pieces back together (by using the line) and thus retrieve the text and its message in entirety.
