Re: The US Journey - Part 3
i am not sure. but my father used to run quite a few franchises of tulec in the late 90's. he had 6 centres, a few local, plus ranchi, plus patna and gangtok. they were very profitable but very quickly turned non-proftiable (a tulec brand problem -- tata unisys, the parent company, decided to get out of education -- add to that my fathers ego). i had to do the dirty work of closing them all down one by one since i was a director. and the trickiest issue i faced was that of my sali. she had done her course in tulec, patna but since i had closed it down, she never got her certificate. other similar students we managed by putting them on call-divert to tulec. my one employee got arrested in gangtok when closing the center -- that was bad news. my father had simply washed his hands off -- ego and bad bad bad business sense. i had even tried converting the kolkata centres to novel-franchisees and that was profitable for a couple of years (for my sister who owned them) until when everything just withered away.
anyway, for my precious sali, i had to pull out a blank certificate of tulec, put her name on it and someone's signature and give it to her. so this is what goes on behind the training institute where you learnt unix and c! everything may look glossy, air conditioned and a bit of america, but not so behind!

you just gave phlegmy some more ammo - he will note this and report it to FBI equivalent in India so you're barred from any business ventures ever again.

Oh wow. Had no idea. We had pretty good teachers. And the certificate was legit too, even though I never got to use it anywhere.

Re: The US Journey - Part 3
i am sure your certificate was legitimate. i think i generalized above. i think i simply wanted an excuse to insert my autobiographical bit too. what i was implying was that these problems crop up once the ROI diminishes. that happened with tulec (and previously uptron, aptech etc.). NIIT centres do not have such problems -- they are the market leaders. last i remember is that tulec stopped giving franchises and started running its own centres. they changed their name to tata infotech ltd. too (broke up with unisys). i do not know the current status.

Re: The US Journey - Part 3
That was a good autobiographical piece. So, from education center franchise to steel. Quite a jump.

Re: The US Journey - Part 3
no. education was a temporary foray for my father when i was looking after steel. steel has always been our main business. i had no role to play in the education stuff except what i mention above.

I had recorded a 5 minute message to him before the songs. Kabir later told me he would just hear that almost daily in the car..

LOL. this used to be in russi modi's time. there were several ads to the above effect in those times -- we also make steel.

Re: The US Journey - Part 3
Yes it was Russi Mody and JJ Irani era. Those ads sure made a very positive and long lasting brand name for the Tatas.
