reunion
my niece dropped in on us yesterday. i hadn't seen her in more than a decade. we once used to live together when we were joint. her father and i are the most bitterly estranged of cousins now. but i always liked her. i couldn't even attend her marriage in jaipur, though my wife did. she had become so pretty. i told her this and she smiled and smiled. throughout the conversation, she could not stop smiling. shortly after marriage, she and her hubby moved to fremont, usa. she has 2 sons, 6 and 8, and she is a teacher in a school. she met my younger but wished to meet my older too. unfortunately he is away with his mom at his mom's parent's place. i promised her i'd send him over as soon as he returned. i took her email and sent her a test mail. she responded: Hi Chacha, . such spontaneity. i see my kids' future in the likes of her. maybe they too will eventually settle abroad and leave us alone.

Why unkil, is there some widely recognized rule against the usage of "marriage" in that context? Or do you just make these things up to jerk Hoozay's chain?

The 2010 United States Census[3] reported that Fremont had a population of 214,089. The population density was 2,443.7 people per square mile (943.5/km²). The racial makeup of Fremont was 70,320 (32.8%) White, 7,103 (3.3%) African American, 976 (0.5%) Native American, 108,332 (50.6%) Asian (18.1% Indian, 17.8% Chinese, 6.7% Filipino, 2.5% Vietnamese, 2.3% Thai, 1.8% Korean, 1.3% Hmong, 1.0% Pakistani, 0.8% Japanese, 0.6% Burmese), 1,169 (0.5%) Pacific Islander, 13,605 (6.4%) from other races, and 12,584 (5.9%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 31,698 persons (14.8%). Among the Hispanic population, 11.0% are Mexican, 0.6% Puerto Rican, and 0.5% Salvadoran. Non-Hispanic Whites were 26.5% of the population in 2010,[4] down from 85.4% in 1970.
Fremont is the home to the largest concentration of Afghans in the United States.[citation needed] This is noted in Khaled Hosseini's 2003 novel Kite Runner. In addition, Fremont has a notable concentration of South Asians, predominantly employed in Silicon Valley's technology sector.

Re: reunion
Nice to know about the reunion with your niece HK!
Have not met too many young Indian-American teachers..the few I have met are down-to-earth and affectionate. Need more smart and caring teachers!
I've had some nice reconnecting/reunions with younger relatives too. Even if older folks had strained relationships.I also think about the many really loving older relatives, who have passed away- the void remains and as time goes by, we slowly step into those roles in some small way (granted everyone is busy these days..and it's really basic contact via e-mails, calls and Yes, Facebook)..with the younger ones..there is much hope, whether they live in the US/India- or other places.
Sometimes..you recognize the unmistakable traits/similarities in them..which remind of their grand parents..who have passed away..their legacies are alive:)

Re: reunion
yeah. our generation has passed, though we still squabble and will forever (my cousins and i). and nothing will come out of it. nothing ever gets resolved. it is always that a new landscape is laid by force on an old one -- the knots never get unraveled. but these youngsters, the new generation, they should not inherit old disputes or step in the shoes of their parents. their lives are and will be radically different from ours -- the sun has set for our larger business family. and these new kids, like my niece: it is such a delight seeing them HAPPY and well adjusted to the new order. some of my cousins (a minority) have made a mistake in bringing up their kids, which is something i have consciously avoided. some of my nephews are drunk on the opiate that they are "businessmen." they are not. they have had a shoddy education and are not fit to do anything in life. they don't have the wherewithal and nor an education (that can substitute for wherewithal these days): this is the harsh reality. they have been misguided by their parents.Maria S wrote:Nice to know about the reunion with your niece HK!

Re: reunion
needles to say, my approach in life has been, at least insofar as far my kids are concerned, to hope for the best but plan for the worst. since my story is no secret on this board (i think i am guilty of usiing such as my personal blog), my kids should have many "options" once they find themselves adults. the credit for this, ironically, goes to one of my cousins who is also my closest and best friend. he raised both his kids as a single parent (his wife committed suicide when the kids were very small). this cousin gave me tips and taught me how to raise my kids from time to time. his daughter is now a doctor and his son is a mech. engineer, working in a bank, and preparing to start his MBA. my cousin has a prosperous business so his son too will have "options" in time (but he is very sceptical if he will exercise the option "business" going by his son's temperament -- i empathize with him). my kids found role models in his kids (to emulate). and, in turn, my kids are role models for my younger brother's kids (despite the fact that him and i don't get along).

ha ha, no. i will be meeting my cousin this weekend with my family and his. some of my cousins have me excommunicated. but not him from i am entangled with him at close quarters. the longing that we perhaps could still settle it will pervade the air but he is so egotistic and old fashioned and etcetra.Natalia Romanova wrote:hear you HK. am sure u must have told her, 'loved meeting u beta...am still gonna fight yo dad'.
you know, returning to india was the biggest shock for me. in college i had encountered the most beautiful minds. suddenly i was thrust into a gathering of the most ugliest of minds. i could not handle the devastation (as i ought to have as a wannabe marwari).
