Impy - I happened to watch Rama Vadyanathan dance where she had to switch between a male and a female role rather quickly and I thought she did a pretty good job of it. I will let you know later what channel and see whether it's on youtube etc.,

She is a very beautiful dancer, i mean physically beautiful! Very few dancers have the effect on the audience. A dancer is successful if she engages her audience with her performance and appearance, however knowledgeable the audience is. It has everything to do with how well she has maintained her body! She is also heavy on bhavam and extremely athletic. I watch her a lot.

Having said that, switching between male and female depictions is a common occurrence in varnams because it is where the artist is given opportunities to showcase sancharis[part of the pada-arthas and vakya-arthas]. Given how she looks and how thin she is, it is no surprise that she is able to switch between the male and female characters with a lot of grace. It is one of the reasons why physical fitness is top priority for a successful BN dancer. I did tow sancharis in my sakhiye varnams for my show and was extremely pleased that some non Indians in the audience sorta “got” the story:-) One was the story of hiranyakashipu and the other was the story of vamana.

wonderful.. dhooL panneetinga polae ! good good ! all that running even in bad weather seems to have paid off well in terms of gratification.. good. I am wondering whether I should covertly figure out your performance schedule in Chennai, watch it discretely and report to all here sunny Cool

now, on rama, I think one of her very strong attributes is keeping her vertebrae erect and also I think her more than average height ( not sure), relatively long hands and long legs with a smaller torso keeps the motion regal/majestic. but i thought her brow movements were limited or at least I wished it was more.. anyways, she was quite mesmerizing
