harakiri (1962) absolutely brilliant movie by masaki kobayashi. available on youtube.

plot -- a one man samurai army out to expose the hypocrisy of the samurai code of honor; set in 17th century japan.

caution: controlled blood and gore, but not gratuitous.

Underground by Emir Kusturica (all his movies, in fact) - takes you on a wild, crazy ride on the surface but the underlying sadness is hard to miss. it is a satire on the history of yugoslavia.

music by bregovic makes it all even more enjoyable.

after the rain. i've been feasting on samurai movies and this is a gorgeously beautiful movie. watch it definitely. was made after kurosawa's death but he started it. so poetic and so magically tranquil.

another great movie i watched was 13 assassins (the older 60s version. apparently a newer color version came out in 2010 that was kickass too). it feels like an epic kalki novel made into film.

check out "yojimbo" and toshiro mifune, the original 'man with no name'.

clint eastwood is the typical(irksome)hollywood copycat.

yeah i plan to watch yojimbo too. after the rain features toshiro mifune's son shiro mifune, also a very good actor.

i also highly recommend this movie (the concubine):

haven't watched this - i do recall watching "farewell, my concubine", the first(or only?) chinese movie to win the palme d'or at cannes,i think.

do you like wong kar-wai movies, the most popular of them all being "in the mood for love"?

no never watched him. will check him out. the concubine is a korean movie.
