Intense heatwave grips Andhra
G.S. RADHAKRISHNA
Hyderabad, May 25: Thirty-six people died today across Andhra Pradesh as scorching winds blowing from the deserts of Rajasthan and Myanmar drove day-time temperatures up to 50°C in some areas, the highest recorded this season.
Official figures put the heat-wave toll at 130 since April 1, though unofficial sources said the number had crossed 300.
The weather office has advised residents not to venture outdoors in the mid-afternoon till 4, while chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, who reviewed the situation with disaster management officials, directed that power cuts be restricted to either early morning or evening.
In state capital Hyderabad, four persons, including two women and a boy, died, prompting the administration to run special buses to reach drinking water to public locations.
The weather office has attributed the heatwave to hot winds blowing from Rajasthan and from across the border in Myanmar. Not only humans, the searing winds have also taken their toll of birds and animals, with reports of deaths of elephants, antelopes, bats, sparrows, hyenas and peacocks coming in from several districts. Figures were not immediately available.
In Hyderabad, authorities of the Nehru zoological gardens have built special shades for birds while air-coolers and huge fans have been placed at the enclosures for wild animals like tigers and lions.
Officials said 26 people died yesterday, though unofficial sources put yesterday’s toll at 100. Over 20 deaths were reported on Thursday.
The coastal towns of Guntur recorded 18 deaths, East Godavari 13, Prakasam 13 and Krishna 10, as the mercury shot above 45 degrees. In the coal mining areas of Khammam district, temperatures rose to 50 degrees, the highest this season.
Karimnagar district accounted for 43 deaths. Twelve persons died in Medak and 11 in West Godavari.
Revenue minister N. Raghuveera Reddy, who reviewed the situation with officials, said below poverty line families that have lost members to sunstrokes would get a one-time assistance of Rs 50,000.

Surprisingly, Mumbai has been quite pleasant until now. The temperature and humidity shot up a bit over the weekend - Saturday was 36.5 deg C, making it the hottest day in this month so far. But that's nothing compared to the North / South.
