he has a decent SAT score, not earth shattering. for an asian it would be considered on the low side, but ok for a white applicant. but he has a good all round resume. except for an asian kid to create an all round resume would be a couple of order of magnitude more difficult. if he excels at violin or cello, that's just a standard asian thing, nothing to write home about. if he plays tennis and is the district champ, that would be fairly normal for an asian too. now an asian who has starred in broadway, started a hospital or two in afghanistan, and reported from some strife torn part of the world like syria while also acing AP calculus, chemistry, physics, us and world history, mastered sanskrit, german, mandarin, and swahili with a perfect SAT score is getting close to well rounded. if he also finds mh 370, that would really round out the well rounded resume. rat race; did i mention it?

>>>Asian/Indian - not likely. Two things I wish would happen, but are the flip sides of this college admission coin:

1) schools drop this diversity nonsense on the basis of ethnicity;

2) parents (immigrant parents especially) drop this obsession with brand name schools

Heard this story from a colleague.  Good story. It  is not very useful to worry about an asian or white student in this case.  African american's need these type of stories.  Let us hope he inspires few more black students to do better in school.

>>> If it inspires, that is great, but the fallacy in this "diversity" is that somehow cultures fall uniformly along color lines, ignoring individual histories.

but there is a lot getting lost in this story.
(a) this kid is not an inner city kid. he is the son of immigrant parents and has all the advantages that come from having an upbringing like that. in that respect he shares many experiences with kids like ours.
(b) you cannot ignore the asian problem. what is often not talked about is the story of the vietnamese kid whose father is a construction worker, the korean kid whose parents slog 24x7 at the neighborhood laundromat, or the indian kid whose dad buses tables at the neighborhood indian hole in the wall restaurant. even if they excel as well as this black kid, they are not going anywhere because their race and ethnicity is going to stand in their way.

Yes. this kid is not representative of a innercity black america. But still he represents the hope that if given the support and environment, blacks could perform well.

As far as asian kids go,  their numbers are too strong to even get american media attention to the quotas against asians.

If he were not black he would not have got into ANY of them nor Stanford, Berkeley, UCLA (even tougher), or GT, Austin, Wisconsin or Minnesota (they take less than 15%). The SAT is good and that is it.

The sad part is diversity is being abused. It is supposed to help the oppressed descendants of slaves and original american hispanics and red Indians. Now we have Ghanians, Kenyans, Brazilians being counted as diversity and "oppressed" people.
This is just like the rich SC/ST/OBCs in India depriving opportunities for the truely backward.

This is not diversity but a travesty.
