Jai Ho! Its time to stop the hate spewing Yogi of Gorakhpur (who is now the star campaigner for BJP in UP)
The Hindu Mahasabha-BJP MP from Gorakhpur, Yogi Adityanath, makes no attempt to mask his intentions with civilities and double-talk. He calls upon the majority community to recognize Muslims as the enemy and to utilize every opportunity to attack them. He has created his own organization, the Hindu Yuva Vahini, which has branches in almost every village, small town and district headquarter of Eastern UP. The members of this organization are mostly unemployed and lumpen youth. The organization has targeted poor youths belonging to the Scheduled and Backward Castes who now throng to its banner in the hope of gaining status and prosperity. Every incident that can be utilized to create communal tension is utilized by the Vahini members with the full support of the Yogi. As Dr. Hari Om, IAS, who was recently removed from his post of DM, Gorakhpur, said in an interview to the Hindi edition of ‘Outlook’ – “I learnt in my two years as DM Gorakhpur that Yogi is a religious leader and MP who wants to be involved in every incident in the area in a dominating fashion. He wants the Hindu community to accept his as their uncontested leader and also the Muslims as their enemies. They should give him donations and gifts during every ceremony. ….He utilizes all big and small events regularly. He inflates non-issues into issues and gives them a communal colour. Giving small and stray incidents involving Muslims like a minor fight, or a case of eve teasing or water flowing from one house in front of another house or shop a communal colour has become a habit with him.”
As a result of the Yogi’s activities, eastern districts of UP like Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Deoria and Gonda resemble a communal tinderbox today. Every year, several incidents of attacks on Muslims in one or several of these districts take place. Often cattle being take to fairs or bought in Haryana by both Muslim and Hindu farmers are forcibly taken away by the Yogi who alleges that these are going to be slaughtered and they are then distributed amongst his followers. Every such incident serves to underline the fact that he is a law unto himself and that he and his followers can act with impunity. They can burn, attack and physically assault as and when they please without facing any administrative action of any kind. This is a pattern established over the years in spite of the fact that there have been Governments of all hues in this time-span. A few police and administrative have to their credit tried to carry out their constitutional duties but they have usually paid the price of ignominious transfers as a result. The reason for this is that the Yogi is the only mathadhish (head of a math) in the country belonging to the Thakur caste and almost all political leaders belonging to his caste treat him with reverence and deference. They also ensure that the party to which they belong behaves in a similar fashion when it is in power. As a result, the Yogi has become a political force on his own. He regularly puts up candidates against the BJP and ensures their victories.

On January 29, his followers assembled at Gorakhnath Temple that falls in an area where more than 50 percent of the population is Muslim. They start hrowing stones and burning tyres in the direction of the Muslim locality and on the road. But there is no retaliation from the other side.
Dr Hari Om, the then dm in-charge, wishes to put it on record that not a single incident of slogan-shouting or stone-pelting was resorted to by Muslims. He wants the world to know that although much grieved by the decision to impose curfew as it hampered Muharram, the Muslims, led by the venerable Miyan saheb, assured the administration of all cooperation as peace was more important and kept their word. Meanwhile, the media kept screaming that Gorakhpur was burning, the walls of the Gorakhnath Temple were demolished. Which, of course, was a naked lie.
And all of a sudden, the dm was informed that he’s been shunted along with the superintendent of police. As he moved away, Rashid, a Muslim youth, was killed. It is a matter of discussion in Gorakhpur that it was done by a Hindu Yuva Vahini man who injured himself to use it as a cover. Newspapers flashed the pictures of the Yuva Vahini man’s bandaged leg, obliterating the killing of Rashid altogether...
Hari Om has one regret — that he had assured Muslims that by giving a reprieve of 7-8 hours in the curfew on January 29, he would ensure that the Muharram tradition was not disturbed. However, the moment he was removed, Rashid was killed to celebrate it as Adityanath’s victory and the curfew was extended. Tazias remained where they were. The Muslims kept their word, he did not. This young officer has just one question for his country: can a community feel at home where it is prevented from even mourning by all kinds of machination? Can a community celebrate its existence in a country where law-keepers look over their shoulders when it is attacked? Such is the sad story of Uttar Pradesh, the truth of one of the many riots that were not.

And the most recent one of his actions is his and his organisations role in the communal buildup in Eastern UP in recent times. Perhaps one can gauge the quality of the intervention by Yogi from the fact that today this area which did not witness any communal riots at the time of partition, an area which did not witness any flareup when Babri Mosque was demolished, has today metamorphosed into an area which comes under highly sensitive communal zones in UP. Indepedent analysts also agree that the recent flareup in Gorakhpur and adjoining areas were a direct outcome of Yogi's actions, because of which the whole region had to face curfew or similar situation for around two weeks. It is true that this unprecedented curfew proved to be backbreaking for most of the population.
Much has been written about the riot like situation created at the instance of Yogi and his gang of lumpens called Hindu Yuva Vahini, which saw deaths of innocents, who intervened in a private scuffle at the time of a marriage party. But for the timely intervention by the then district magistrate Hari Om and the Superintendent of Police, the situation would have turned worse. The D.M ( who was immediately transferred by Mulayam for his prompt action) saw to it that the main troublemaker(s) in this whole episode be interned to calm the situation. It was worth noting that this strategy worked and for the first time in his whole political career Yogi found himself on the defensive. Within a week of his internment the 'sporadic and spontaneous actions' by his followers in different parts of Eastern UP died down, the traders association also decided to resume work which had initially declared a closure till the release of Yogi. While charges were clamped against Yogi under breach of peace and danger to communal harmony, many of his close associates found themselve cooling their heels with charges under National Security Act filed against them....
A key feature of the Hindutva experiment engaged in by Yogi is to always keep Muslims in focus and win over the dalits and backwards to his side. In order to organise the Dalits against the Muslims he has made it a policy to interfere in all small or big quarrels between them and endeavour to paint it in communal black. There are no two opinions that Yogi has succeeded in instigating anti-Muslim feelings from Gorakhpur, Deoria, Siddharthnagar to Baharaich . The geographical layout of Gorakhpur has also helped him in this. At one end it abuts on Ayodhya and on the other on Nepal. Like the RSS the bogey of ISI training camps on Indo-Nepal border is also raised by Yogi. Every day there is a plethora of propaganda in papers about increase in the ISI activities through the madarsas on the Indo-Nepal border or again The clandestine relations between the ISI-Maoist .Needless to say all based on figments of their feverish imagination.
Uttar Pradesh PUCL as well as another organisation-Insaaf˜in their Enquiry Report ,'UP Ab Gujarat ki Rah Par' ( UP On Way To Gujarat) had given a long list of deeds of Yogi out to become a mini-Mody. On the basis of this Report based on spot investigations into the incidents at Mohan Mundera , Nathua and Turkmanpur a representation was also made to the NHRC (5th July 2002) inter alia clarifying how Yogi gives lurid communal colours to what is after all just a criminal misdeed ; the police and administration adopts a purely defensive posture before the attach resulting into engulfng the Muslim population in terror and insecurity.The unfortunate fatal attacks on Muslims at Mohan Mundera (Dt.Kushinagar) on 19th June 2002, at Nathua(PS-Pipraich ) on 23rd June or again on the 25th June 2002 at Pande Hata (Gorakhpur)are links in the same chain. It may be mentioned that under the provocation of alleged rape of a backward class girl by an antisocial element who happened to be a Muslim a mob of thousands of people had attacked the Muslim locality setting their houses on fire.Hindutva terrorist had a hand in it.There are reports that after heaping destruction on the Muslims at MohanMundera the mob descended on Nahua (PS Piparaich, Dt.Gorakhpur) where following the harassment of a Dalit Hindu girl there were some incidents of stabbing.The mob set fire to three Muslim houses there. This was preceded by a public meeting and when sufficient strength gathered the locality was challenged and the attack mounted. However, in this case a complaint has been filed against the members of Hindu Mahasabha and the rowdy Deepak Agarwal, a right hand man of Yogi.
October 2005 witnessed a communal flareup in Mau based in Eastern UP on the eve of the Durga Pooja celebrations. It saw killing of nine innocents apart from the hundreds of wounded people.While the rest of the world came to know of the controversial role played by the local MLA Mukhtar Ansari during the riots or the lethargy exhibited by the law and order machinery while controlling the situation, the aggressive role played by Yogi Adityanath was not much talked about.
