On Dogs
I love dogs but dont want to raise one myself - tons of work among other issues.
But, this time on my visit I noticed a dog sleeping in front of my house every evening and go away in the AM roaming around during the day. It would accompany me or my wife till the main road - about 200 yards away with two turns - every time we went out and also receive us - if it saw us on return. My wife would talk to the dog and says this is our unofficial house dog - of course, my FIL does not like it. It would bark (if you know the street dogs in India) its life out threateningly at anyone nearing my house especially at night. My wife or my MIL never felt afraid to walk the dark 200 yards at night as they knew the "dog network of 3 or 4" would protect them by providing escort service. The day we left with our bags, somehow the dog must have sensed it and would stand in front of the taxi and as the Taxi moved forward it would go in front of the taxi barking all the way when it was almost run over by another car on the main road. I felt sad for a minute in leaving this dog.
It appeared to be around 2 to 4 years old, healthy and well built, and hope I get to see this dog on my next trip.

Yeah. I feel sorry for dogs. They're such needy creatures.

that's ok. the humans who are their companions are needy too. what's the problem if they make each other happy?
i never knew until two years ago, what beautiful creatures they are. just amazing.

Re: On Dogs
funnily enough this last summer when i was doing my usual weekend long bike rides, there was this cat who would show up at a particular intersection where my biking buddy and i would take a water break. s/he (never found out its sex) would always show up from a distance and would mew constantly, come physically close to me, sit down and look at me. i never figured what it wanted but was afraid it would get run over or something. so gently i would lead it to the driveway of a neighboring house and then leave. and the next week the pattern repeated.

Ironically, no one from my house ever fed anything to this dog. My FIL does not like the dog even sleeping in front of the house and would try to shoo it away.

Must've grown up with dogs as a kitten.

cute writeup.
The only time a street dog paid special attention to me when I went in or out of my house was back then when she was dating our pet dog. He had a lot of girlfriends in series, and somehow they all looked the same. Made me wonder if dogs have 'types' too.
This trip around, woke up many nights with dog-gang wars going on all night in the colony behind my rents' house. You would hear dogs barking followed by some dog whimpering on nights or early mornings you could not sleep. Asked bro why they don't get them lifted away. He said they don't let pedestrians or cyclists pass by at nights. Serves as a security in case anyone wants to jump in the backyard through the fence on that street. Made sense. Matches your story.
