bangalore to vellore by train
ok, i live a vicarious existence. older traveled to vellore for a competition with his team. here are the sights and sounds he heard in train (note that he was "only the second" in our family to experience such bullshit):
https://soundcloud.com/vineetbb/bangalore-to-vellore-by-train
what he hears is:
baaji, baaji, baaji
soup, soup, hot soup,
tomato soup, tomato soup.
what we hear in bengal (in trains) is:
lozenge, nembu lozenge, nembu lozenge
deem, deem, shedho deeeem,
muri, muri, muri,
bhezetable chop, chop, bhezetable chop.

i'm sure they sell idli vada too though it might not be in the clip. all the hawkers selling food were railway certified or railway people -- in uniform with ids. that is unusual -- don't see that in bengal.

In the Southie trains with pantry car, there are railway "Employees" who sell food. But, many of these guys have an attitude. Of course, other private guys sell food as well.

Do they still give the same vegetable cutlets like they did in the 90s? Used to love them.
And the trains now have seats like the trains here? I think earlier it was strictly all berths. 3 per berth daytime. Obviously just 1 for nighttime.

before shatabdi (and the standardization of chair-car trains), there were chair-car coaches in certain sectors. rajdhani used to carry one or two chair-car coaches (for overnight journeys) -- now they don't. other trains, like black diamond in bengal, had hifalutin ac1 chair cars (sofas... four couches around a table) and exquisite food (breakfast for it was a 4 hour morning journey). so seating did not always mean only berths.

Actually those greasy cutlets smelt far better - you could smell them a compartment away - than they actually tasted. Somewhat like Dunkin coffee. Their outlets smell far better even from a distance than their weak, watery coffee tastes.

Oh now that you mention it. I do remember going to Delhi on such an express train, I don't remember the name. Could be Rajdhani or shatabdi. I think in 94 or 95. Picked up a lot of students from different cities in UP along the way who seem to be returning to schools on Sunday night.
