this ranking, I think, is based on the number of citations of each university in wikipedia. the age of the university is likely to have been a factor, but not overwhelmingly so, because some relatively young universities are in the top 20.

So only 3 state universities are influential - Berkeley, UCLA, and Michigan.

I think much of the ranking shyt is reinforcing the same old "perceptions" through convenient criteria. Private is good and public is bad. How else once can justify NYU at #20? It is almost a shytty university.

Yeah, they don't include polytechnic colleges like the IITs.

Seriously, the reasons you listed in your other post on the thread are inter-related; they influence each other. Academic culture is not easy to build and sustain. Those that manage to do both on a long-term basis must be doing something right. Indian institutions, quite appropriately, can't be on the list.
