National Award-winning filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan on Sunday said though Hindi was a “beautiful language” and it should be counted as a regional one, it should not be imposed on others.

“Hindi is a very beautiful language. There are very fine writers in Hindi, no doubt about that, but you cannot impose Hindi over and above others... not only administratively but even otherwise,” he said on the sidelines of the second edition of Gateway LitFest here.

"Three months down the line, there will be a regulation that will make every mobile phone sold in India mandatory to have English, Hindi and one regional language," a senior DoT official said.

The official said that to make Digital India a success, "broadband cannot be limited to English-speaking middle and upper class Indians and it needs to go down to rural areas".

What a dumb decision. It should be English + 2 regional languages. I hope there will be a much bigger revolt against this move than JNU & Jat quota stir.

Hindi is an official language of the Central government. DoT falls under the Central government, Comrade.

That being said, Tamil is at least an international language. Hindi is only a local language with many mutually unintelligible dialects.

Is this a 28 day period thing you have, when you have to bring this up again an again?

The same trumpet is getting old.

If you're a well wisher of India, you will have to bring it up time and again, else stupid North Indians with their pea-sized brains will try their best to drag India down/hold the country back at every opportunity.

"The Department of Telecom (DoT) is likely to come out with regulations in 3-4 months that will make it mandatory for mobile phones to support Hindi and at least one regional language.
The move is aimed at making users communicate in local languages  access government services like e-payment through mobile phones."
How is that bad? Not everyone knows english. Using indian languages within india is dragging India down/holding the country back?  Rolling Eyes

For example, in your ancestral town Madanapalle, Telugu & Kannada serve a better purpose than Hindi & Telugu and similarly in Kuppam, services in Tamil & Telugu would be better off than Hindi. Hindi is & will be completely irrelevant in such places.

They may not know a word of english either. So, english will also be completely irrelevant in such places (according to your logic, why have english?). But, they would still have a regional language, for eg, telugu. What's the problem?

I doubt it very much but if that is the case (they can do a survey to find out) then remove both English & Hindi rather than pushing their agenda.

Have no doubts. That would be the case with many many people. Yeah, weed out english, weed out hindi, use only regional languages in the regional pockets. Problem solved?

Which is less complicated? Having the three language formula which could cover almost all of India or whatever you are implying above?

If it is complex then do nothing. Doing nothing is better than an half-assed job as proposed by the DoT.

since time immemorial, in india, the rationale for support to retain english is that in every small village/town, there will be someone to help out with english but that may not be with hindi.
