son (while still eating big portions of it): oh mommy this is so bitter. (but guess he's too hungry to not eat it. He did wipe out his plate)

daughter has been going on and on (skipped my own dialogs here, guess you can imagine what all I must be saying):

"I HATE karela...

"Why do you even cook it? No body else likes it; it's just you! ...

"It's so bitter!...

"I am NOT eating it...

"NO! You will not feed me, I will eat it myself...

"It tastes like the inside of a car... ( scratch

)

"For 13 years you have known that I hate it, you STILL give it to me, why don't you ever understand...

"I don't NEED to eat everything that's cooked by you...

"ok ok ok, I am eating it... you don't have to WATCH me...

"I will NEVER develop a taste for it. Just because you started liking it at 17 doesn't mean I would too...

(I told her I began liking it more when I acidentally ate it at my cousin's place)

"WHO serves karela to house guests? It's just plain rude...

"There is NO way I will finish what all is in my plate...

"Maybe it's just you who is a bad cook...

"I AM scooping a lot of daal with it, it's still bitter...

"Why do you like bitter food? WHO likes bitter food? I don't know ANYONE who likes bitter food. It's just you. When you buy chocolate, it's DARK chocolate. When you buy icecream, guess what flavor it is? DARK chocolate! Something that NO one else would eat at home... (the ONE time that I bought it, I am still hearing about it)

I did boil it in salty water before cooking, and also added amchur when cooking. Cooked it with red onion. Trust me, it was not that bitter. Actually, to me it was good. But she just hates it. If it was really bitter, they both would have refused to eat it. They finished it, meaning it was alright. Half of her rant was even before she took the first bite! And then it was too late to back out I guess.

kids shouldn't be forced to eat foods they absolutely hate, especially no-brainer-kids-will-hate-it stuff like KARELA. It's bitter and bitter is not tasty to ANY kid. so why force them to eat it?

not like I am shoving it down their choking throats... they do eat it. Son is slightly more receptive than daughter is, but they both eat it. Can't handle fussy kids (even if I myself was one).

Bitterness is one of the six tastes one should have in anyone's diet for a complete/proper meal/food.

You could try making some saute/cook with Red onions and well ripen tomatoes to reduce the bitter taste. You could make Karela chips. Thin slices marinated with yughurt and dried and deep fried:)

I just love Karela. One of my regular lunch/meal while working in Mumbai/SEEPZ was just 2-3 rotis and Karela sabji and most ppl wouldnot order this and I could avoid the big waiting/line at the canteens:)

Bwahahaha...neem leaves and virtually all pills in the medicine chest are (a) bitter and (b) full of medical goodness. Are those your dinner-time favorites too?

dried and fried neem flowers are an occasional treat in tambrahm cuisine.

I don't eat karela. I cook though and taste it while cooking. I boil it with tamarind water and salt and drain it to get rid of the bitterness.

at least she eats it...be very proud.
