Thamizhars (and wannabe-Thamizhars), I was given to understand by a 100% authentic Iyer I met while waiting for a table at Cafe Madras in Matunga that this is a more authentic depiction of Dravidian dances forms than the chaste, Brahminical (aka ingratiating with NI) performances by Parimala Murugadosai. Do you agree? If yes, why? If not, why not?

PS: A translation of the lyrics would be very helpful to non-Thamizhar students of authentic Dravidian culture. Thanks.

What is the garment the guy is wearing on his torso? Looks like a cross between a bra and an angavastram.

That could be the kanchukam worn on the torso, as described by Adiarkku Nallar in his commentary on the Silappadikaram. I'll defer to Max on this though.

That explains it. He copied all the items in his exceptional menu from Cafe Madras in Matunga. No wonder he received a Certificate of Authenticity.

Hey c'mon. Don't slander the goodly Kamath maam who runs Cafe Madras. Other than that very interesting ragi-masala dosa (which is a perfectly organic innovation in Karnataka where ragi is the common man's cereal), he serves extremely authentic Udupi fare. No paneer masala dosas here. Thank you.

Synthesis and integration is what this is. We have just glimpsed the post-synthesis integrated future.

Oh that's ok. I guess even authentic Thamizh song-writers are seeking synthesis these days. As we all know, more Thamizhars speak Hindi these days than UPites speak Thamizh. So it's natural for some dil to get injected in the proceedings.

ha ha @ dil. but but,

Sizeum matterum thinkum wonderum
^ this i think is in highly esoteric ulat phulat register. the answer is not the obvious: tamilians. the answer lies in gultis do ultis as nats would attest. *they* score in that department.

from wiki:

The story is about a Marathi girl Meenakshi Deshpande (Rani Mukerji) falling in love with a Tamil artist Surya (Prithviraj). It is a quirky and funny love story with the backdrop of a Marathi-Tamil cultural clash.[1] The lead female protagonist woos the stranger she desires as he smells good.[3]

Hoozay, this is a Maharashtrian mulgi. The smell of crisp large denomination bank notes is what will turn her on. Not curry leaves or sambar powder.

Add to the above the word 'utar' (a better phonetic spelling would be 'utaar') and also the word 'bhi'.

Aiyyo. The extent of synthesis and integration sought by authentic Thamizh song-writers is far higher than what anyone had hitherto suspected.

another hindi word being used is 'me' whose phonetic spelling should probably be 'mein' ('dil me utarum').

yeah looks like garment was imported from Manchester UK for our athletic aunties and on this guy it looks more like the attempts of Dolly Parton and suchlike try wearing it !
