Organic compounds on Mars...
... but it is not clear yet whether the rover brought them along from earth. Exciting news nevertheless.

If they rule out contamination, the science team will “get into the complex question of whether this is some type of biological material,” said project scientist John Grotzinger. “That’s well down the line for us.”

India's Chandrayan mission already found extraterrestrial organic matter (remanants of a mallu tea shop on Moon). This Mars thingie may simply be an extension of that franchise.

Haha @ "panel discussion on the relevance of Dostoyevsky in the new Russia." Reminds me of an actual discussion I once overhead at a tea shop in another (then) communist-ruled state, about the situation in Venezuela.

Yeah, any conclusive evidence of Martian life -- even if it is all long-dead -- will have a big impact on how we view our place in the world. It will force an adjustment to the worldviews of people who believe in creationism, just like Copernicus changed the worldview of their intellectual predecessors.doofus_maximus wrote:earth-shattering indeed. hope this holds true just to get the creationists in a twist ;-)

wonder why we always think in terms of water and organic matter when it comes to life. There is always a possibility for some other kind of life that lives on other elements. A few months back, they found organisms deep down in the antarctic ice - in that cold, dark environment - that were millions of years old directly linking to early days of life. That was a surprising discovery that went against the fixated ideas. If plants can breath in CO2 and anaerobes can exist, there could always be organism that live on other elements - just the possibility.
