Ms. M - We are trying to find the best possible education for my daughter, who will start her 7th grade in 2014-2015, next year - kind of focussed on High school years, just before college. I am weighing my options to send her to the best education possible. What would you recommend to look for? She is pretty smart, like any parent feels... going to the public school in their gifted-and-talented special education program. But that discontinues next year, and I have to figure out what to do next. Please advise and guide, I'd really appreciate your views.

Regards,
TS.

Is this the real- the one and only Mr. TS?

If so..how nice to see you again! If now..hello stranger TS2!

Since you asked, just in general:

*Since the public school is going to end this "specific" program..you can find out if they are going to restructure, redesign and enhance their regular courses-curriculum in other ways and make it more challenging.  I know some public schools try to do that, when they there is a lack of funds to continu gifted-talented, magnet programs.

*If not, unless you are against private schools- that is a good option(imo), and look into them.

*Nowadays there are also tuition academies, even online courses which can be an "additional resources" as well.

Nice to know that you are a proud parent of a smart daughter..good luck!

There'll be many after school clubs in high school like debate, chess, science olympiad, math olympiad, academic bowl, future business leaders, cross word puzzle, etc which satisfy/challenge/quench her intellectual capabilities. She can even start her own club. She can also take as many AP courses as she is able to, which are pretty challenging.

That is very good advice from Kinnera for High School!

I was thinking about *Middle school (grades six- eight), but some middle schools offer a lot of after-school activities which can be enriching and challenging as well.

The academies are recommended for support- (after hours and weekends)..offer high-school level (advanced) math, science and language etc courses.

If the family is well-educated, and can take the time and work with them and can be creative/ design individual academic study (literally "home work") that would be great too!

Ms. Maria - Need advise Empty Ms. M

Post by TruthSeeker Thu Jul 04, 2013 1:29 am

Ms. M - Foremost - Thanks for your reply.

Secondly - Yes, I am the same TS from Sulekha.

Now to my dilemma, and your advise:

The idea of private school has crossed my mind, but I am not sure if I can or cannot afford esp. after second kid reached serious school, while first is in college in future. Maybe I can. Maybe I cannot. But the pinch will be felt throughout. Kent(Coed) in Denver is 22K per year, and St. Mary's (all girls) is 16K in tuition. But money has no equivalent to excellent education. I grew up in an co-ed school in India, so not sure if this girls-only school is also a good idea. I want my daughter to have the BEST possible education. Is private school clearly a better option?

Thanks again,
TS.

Ms. Maria - Need advise Empty Nenu aka Ms. Kinnera?

Post by TruthSeeker Thu Jul 04, 2013 1:52 am

Nenu,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Not all schools or school systems are same in US.

I, as a parent might have a very good understanding on what's good or bad, in India - Its somewhat confusing for me while understanding the education system here.

All the clubs, and "options" a kid is provided is one thing, and all the things a kid is "supposed to do" are another.

Having the options do not equate to kids actually doing it, coming from an Indian background.

I am actually confused because kids here are not even challenged for 10% of their potential, unless they join a club.

I want a school - which will challenge them for their curriculum, teach them music, rock climbing, extra curricular - all during their school hours - to make them well-rounded individuals than book-bees of India or free-I-dont-care of US.

Isn't there a school like this in US?

Regards,
TS.

Dear TS,

Good to see you again! *Handshake* well, *hug*

For us, co-ed private schools were a better option- based on *our circumstances and what we thought was beneficial- higher academic standards, smaller class size, more discipline, more travel and other service activities/opportunities,  even simple things like uniforms  (which I always prefer, and now many public schools have also mandated), and it was more affordable (7-8 k/year) where we lived.  Of course..not all private schools are the same or great, and depends on how the child adapts to the different school environments.

Is St. Mary's the only private school in your area-driving distance?  Usually, there are quite a few schools, even in small cities.

Hope you do whatever is best for your family-may be try public school first- for a year and see how she does and likes it..and if you are not pleased and if you can afford it, then make the decision to send your daughter to a good private school, just in my view.

take care.

Dear Ms. M,

*hugs* to you as well. I do foresee a longer relationship with you when it comes to guidance for my daughter with you. If you dont mind, please allow me to send a personal email to you.

It appears, you are inclined towards a private school. I do not want to confuse the child by changing schools that frequently. Perhaps, after her middle school - I shall save enough to send her to a private HS. She is a rebel, I'd prefer any school which is "HIGH" on discipline.

Regards,
TS.

Dear Mr. TS,

Sure..do e-mail me when you want to esp about family and personal matters..(some public forums are scary, even after many years of interactions!)

I will be glad offer my insights, *if I can- based on my experiences. While these insights may be helpful, they are certainly not "one set of suggestions- fit all"..Parenthood is already hard, without me or anyone putting pressure on anyone and implying there are "better ways to parent" and appear superior to others.

Wish you the best in all your efforts Dad!

take care.
