According to TAM Sports, an audience measurement company that tracks TV viewership, the average TRP of the fourth season of the IPL is only 3.94. Last year, the IPL had managed to garner many more eyeballs on TV and the TRPs had shot up to 5.29.

There could be several reasons for the drop in TV viewership. And the main perhaps, is an overdose of cricket, with IPL-4 starting just a week after the conclusion of the World Cup. As former Indian spinner and cricket expert Maninder Singh puts it, "The BCCI has to make sure that future programmes are not so cramped. Since there's so much cricket happening, it's obvious that some of the key players will take rest. And when the big guns don't show up on the cricket field, people automatically lose interest in the sport."

Agrees Saba Karim, and says, "IPL-4 started just after the CWC concluded, the franchisee owners didn't get enough time to use their star players for promotions. Also, I feel that in this year's IPL, we haven't had too many close, nail-biting encounters."

The recently concluded World Cup gave the cricket buffs a real treat in terms of cricketing action, which perhaps they are not able to get in this IPL. "I followed all the previous editions of the IPL rather closely. But this year, it's not the same. If I'm surfing channels and happen to chance upon an interesting match, toh dekh leta hoon," says Ankit Chopra, a software engineer.

Even the presence of Bollywood celebs at the matches hasn't helped the situation much. "In the first couple of editions, the presence of stars like Shah Rukh and Shilpa Shetty was a novelty for viewers like me and frankly speaking, it is because of them that I started watching the IPL. But now their presence has become routine and they aren't an attraction," says Neha Srivastav, an executive.

Tripping TRPs
IPL - 4 3.94
IPL - 3 5.29
IPL - 2 4.49
IPL - 1 5.24

Yeah, there's a serious overdose of cricket. The world cup was great and I followed it closely. But haven't bothered to find out anything about IPL so far. Hopefully this TRP situation will make them rethink the timing and prevent such an overdose in future.

10 teams was always going to be a problem. add to it the timing of the tournament - right after the world cup. i had thought that the interest would go up in about two weeks after the start of the tournament but it has not happened. this IPL is incredibly boring. they need to shorten it to about 3 weeks.
