What's changing day by day in America as authoritarianism takes hold Empty What's changing day by day in America as authoritarianism takes hold

Amy Susskind has made it her project to document how things we have taken for granted are changing from day to day in quite the minutest detail.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/trump-won-and-amy-siskind-started-a-list-of-changes-now-its-a-sensation/2017/06/23/cdba2b12-575e-11e7-b38e-35fd8e0c288f_story.html?

The idea, she said, came from her post-election reading about how authoritarian governments take hold — often with incremental changes that seem shocking at first but quickly become normalized. Each post begins with: “Experts in authoritarianism advise to keep a list of things subtly changing around you, so you’ll remember.”

If we don't recover from this era, this will also serve as a remembrance of how things were in pre-authoritarian America.

Even if you agree with the politics of Presidents Bush or Obama, their actions as chief executive were vastly more authoritarian than what Trump has currently demonstrated. Bush and Obama expanded domestic surveillance, both centralized healthcare (in the case of Bush’s Medicare expansion and Obama’s Affordable Care Act), and Obama issued the highest total number of executive orders and memoranda since Jimmy Carter.

What do you need in order to be a trumptard? Utter disregard for the truth, and inability to do simple arithmetic, for starters.

"Executive orders and memoranda".

Memoranda may or may not be published, depending on the administration’s own determination of “general applicability and legal effect,” which make presidential memoranda difficult to count. George W. Bush published 131 memoranda over his entire presidency, whereas Barack Obama issued 257 that were published in the Federal Register. Bill Clinton published just 14 during his presidency.

Writing a memo is now a sign of authoritarianism? I guess HR people and office managers are real authoritarians then.
