Isn't this the NYT's conservative columnist?
I don't understand any of this either, and if I was lunching with Mr.Brooks I'd have asked him or someone at the sandwich shop what these things were. Why didn't he offer to explain it to his friend?
Recently I took a friend with only a high school degree to lunch. Insensitively, I led her into a gourmet sandwich shop. Suddenly I saw her face freeze up as she was confronted with sandwiches named “Padrino” and “Pomodoro” and ingredients like soppressata, capicollo and a striata baguette. I quickly asked her if she wanted to go somewhere else and she anxiously nodded yes and we ate Mexican.

Yes, he was also the conservative voice on PBS Newshour, I haven't listened to it in a while, so not sure if he's still on that show.

How does he fit us immigrants into his narrative? In some ways I feel very much at home, in some other important ways, especially when it comes to food, religio-cultural events like Bar Mitzvahs, weddings, and funerals I sometimes feel out of the group "that's in the know." I have to occasionally rely on my children to be my social guides.

And what about hyper rich enclaves like the bay area where the white folks are the ones out of place and not in the know?

Maybe not uniformly true. Certain companies (not high end software) that I deal with and have a lot of friends in are completely swamped with Indians and Chinese, so maybe I am getting a very distorted view.

Asian Americans are 6% of the American population. They are heavily over represented in Silicon Valley and at Google, per the data on that Mother Jones article. .
