Re: NTR-Greatest actor in India
I did see the poll.
I have only seen NTR in two movies- starring in religious character-roles. Remember him being very handsome..but, looked up Wiki now (Wiki could have done better in picking a pic..like some of us would like to remember him:D!) Can't understand why Sivaji and Rajini are not even on the list- well, Sivaji is a Shakespearean-theatrical actor, but Rajini is brilliant in serious-character roles- must have been on the list, imo.
Sridevi..can see her among the best..from child star..maturing..with versatile roles.
*On a better note..delighted to see K. Balachander in the top three! He is my fav. director- when it comes to creating fantastic-multifaceted-strong "pudhumai penn" women roles!
*Nayagan..was ok. (3/5 stars) from me.

Whoa..did not know Nayagan is so popular and adored(looked up some clips)..
This song is great..while Kamal can still be the hero..the actress Saranya has apparently been pushed to age..and is the top "Mother" role-star now in tamil cinema contemporary times..and really the BEST, imo! She is terrific and delightful too..was funny to see her emphatically say "No"..if they offered the role of Kamal's Amma to her!

just curious? this is a national poll. what is the point in using a regional language in posts? is there a hidden meaning? or is utter meant for only certain sub groups?

girls family loses the bread winner. the elder guy brahmananandam helps the family with an eye on the cutie . he also funds young guys family. he takes the young guy under his wing but gets angry when the girl chooses the hero over him.
this is one of the times ntr Jr showed ability to deliver dialogues and show some acting talent.

Looks like you don't know that Telugu is second only to Hindi in Indian languages spoken. Movie industry in SI (Madras) is older than that in Bombay. Also, many Hindi movies are remakes of either Telugu or Tamil movies.

Sandilya garu,
The reply does not answer the question. It is related to communicating with such readers. I am not disputing your right or others right to publish whatever you want in any language. Just wondering why talk in a regional language about a national poll.

Looks like you are losing your ability to read "the message" in my posts.
Rajni is a great actor who acts shitty for the last 30 years. you should see his pre-1985 movies to see his acting skills. He was too good as a villain in the 70s movies.
He just does not want to act well bcz there is no need (just like MGR).

Us mortals do not always catch the sarcasm in samiyar's utterins. You have to be patient with us non mensa beings.
Rajnikanth is a good actor by any measure. If your measurement says otherwise then exchange it with nityanand.
The question is can he be placed in the same league as sivaji?

To be honest, I dont label anyone in India as a great(est) actor - at least the most commercially popular ones. They have acted well in many movies but also were 9are) lousy in many movies.
I like Sean Connery, Nassirudin Shah, and many current crop of youngsters - not the box office masala heros.
P.S. I like this new girl Anjali (Gult actress) whose newest movie - Vathikutchi (match stick) - I am waiting for. I rechecked her wiki page and (smartly) the birthdate has been removed. She is a latecomer for movies and she was almost 25 (in 2006). It was there in Wiki sometime back and I made a mental note. She is a well-respected except she is already 31. But, she looks great and can easily pass for a 24 yr old.

Uppiliji,
Now i understand your thinking on the subject.
Just my opinion on the actors you listed:
naseeruddin shah - good actor. My favorite. But not in amitabh and dilip kumar class.
Prakash raj - above average. Not even close to great character actors like sv ranga rao.
Sean connery - he is a hero but can he show any emotions? I would not put him in my actor column. Peter o' toole, marlin brando, jimmy stewart. Now those are great talent.

TBT,
I was serious..it's impossible to compare any "great" actor-legend with others. It's not fair to any great actor, and one can always admire and praise someone without putting down/demeaning others! A brilliant critic can brilliantly analyze an actor as good or good, but legends are made by the commoners-masses who don't have to be educated or wealthy..they know something "special" when they see it in coming alive- light up the screen.
*You can NEVER fool the masses, in regards to elevating them to the great ones (universal!)
In regards to tamil movies, since I know a little (having seen a lot - being part of the masses)..think Sivaji, MGR, Kamal, Rajini are among the all time greats-legends. *MGR was perhaps the least "theatrical actor" among them and had an agenda..but, there was something authentic and unique about him-just like the other *three legends.
Here is a short clip- Rajini in one of my fav. movies (of all time- including English movies)- "Mullum Malarum"..His arm is amputated following an injury, and his boss Sarath Babu tells him he is fired..and he responds with "After all..we are human beings and I would have done the same if I were you and don't worry, I am a bad guy- even if I lose my arms and legs, I will survive".
And for contrast..he is a funny clip from Muthu- it's a bit long can start watching from watch from 2.0 (it's many years after that one above with Sarath Babu)..*as a commoner among the masses..I like folk music, village dramas etc- so liked this one too:) Does not need translation! It just shows his versatility.

Maria,
i agree that masses have a role in deciding greatness but in commercial world in my opinion masses cannot be the single or primary factor. if we leave it to masses mgr is the greatest ever in the world. we know that is not a fact.
rajani is a good actor with a limited range. he is great in few roles. sivaji has broader range and can live a role. both overact so it cancels out.
that is my two cents based on a limited sample.

This is a meaningless poll. I think initially when it was still obscure, only a few telugu people voted. Now that it has become a little more popular, others started voting in. Kamal Hasan is leading now , which may change when Rajni fans get wind of it.

they might have mistaken greatest to mean most impactful. NTR is the most impactful movie actor, certainly among the top 3 in indian movie history.
