The Reluctant Fundamentalist was pedestrian fare and I was surprised that Mira Nair has run out of tricks in her bag. The movie is probably targeting the mainstream western audiences that pronounce the name of the country as eye-ran. For south asian audiences the storyline was ho-hum and has been repeated often enough by polyester kurta-clad secularists.

IMDB synopsis:
"A young Pakistani man is chasing corporate success on Wall Street. He finds himself embroiled in a conflict between his American Dream, a hostage crisis, and the enduring call of his family's homeland."

Muslims are of two kinds - the al-qaeda variety and the garden-variety reluctant fundamentalists. The so-called moderates are being pushed over the wall into the 'reluctant' territory. And the push is primarily a US-driven war on terror. In a polarized world, US unwittingly breeds extremists out of decent, strip-club frequenting muslim capitalists.
