The Tamil Nadu chief minister detailed her government's pro-people policies and schemes. "In an unprecedented move - on the lines of the Haj pilgrimage, my government has made provision for pilgrimage to Jerusalem and also to Muktinath and Mansarovar. The deep spiritual and religious aspirations of our people are endeavoured to be catered to," she claimed.Rashmun wrote:http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Jayalalithaa-says-she-is-against-communal-politics/articleshow/24945056.cms
>>> Dr. Jayalalitha is quite smart. This is a tactical move by Amma to outmanoeuvre Karunanidhi who must be fuming now. But Puratchi Tahalaivi's long strategy of becoming a power center at the federal level is going to pay handsome dividends to people of TN.
Look at how she is throwing a bone to the Islamic and Christian fanatics in TN. She will just pick two or three fellows in these groups and send them on Haj or Bethlehem. Or give a subsidy of Rs. 60 to each of the idiots who want to ride on a camel in Saudi Arabia. That will make them happy. At the same time, she will use fake encounters to finish off any Muslim scumbag who engages in terrorism.
They don't realize that she is not only smart but tough as well.

She is giving the classical arguments in favor of Indian secularism. She does not ever talk of pseudo secularism or fake secularism. I agree that she would make a fine PM.Rishi wrote:The Tamil Nadu chief minister detailed her government's pro-people policies and schemes. She said the secular credentials of Indians are evidenced by the 1857 rebellion, when Muslims and Hindus joined hands against a foreign power. "The policy of tolerance, which constituted a historical basis of secularism, 'Sarva Dharma Samabhava' has its roots in the Vedas. In the Arthashastra, the line between politics and theology has been clearly defined. Its author, Kautilya, has classified polity as a separate branch of science."
The AIADMK supremo said it is our primary duty to uphold the tenets of the Constitution and seek to unite the people of India rather than work as divisive forces, for secularism alone could be the cornerstone of an egalitarian, forward looking society with religious pluralism, civil liberties and equal opportunities. Secularism seeks to negate discrimination and tension based on religion.

Muslims and Hindus might have joined togetrher in 1857. It's a historical fact that Tamils and hindians did not join hands in 1857. Tamils stayed out of that Northern mutiny.
So it goes, Tamils and Hindians are separate nations and peoples.

That was a separate mutiny that precedes Northern sepoy mutiny by about 50 years. Hindians did not join this southern mutiny. Hindians stayed out of that Southern mutiny.Rashmun wrote:What about Vellore mutiny ?Kayalvizhi wrote:>> the 1857 rebellion, when Muslims and Hindus joined hands against a foreign power.

Re: Jayalalitha indicates that she is opposed to BJP
Vellore mutiny, and also several other similar mutinies all over India, was a precursor to the 1857 mutiny. Since it was localized to Vellore and since Tamils outside Vellore did not join in the mutiny, your logic would imply that Vellore is not a part of Tamil Nadu.Kayalvizhi wrote:That was a separate mutiny that precedes Northern sepoy mutiny by about 50 years. I read the Frontline article. It talks of British suspicions of revolt (no revolt took place) and murmurs (but no mutiny).Rashmun wrote:The frontline article shows that Tamils had participated in the 1857 mutiny also.Rashmun wrote:Here you go:Kayalvizhi wrote:>> several other similar mutinies all over India

Only concrete revolt is in 1858 not in 1857.
In 1857, the 18th Regiment of the British army was quartered at Vellore. Some sepoys of the Regiment revolted in November 1858.
So there was no Tamil support for the 1857 NI mutiny.

The 1857 mutiny spanned the years 1857-1859. Even in 1857 there were various incidents of anti British violence in Tamil Nadu as the frontline article points out.Kayalvizhi wrote:I read the Frontline article. Rashmun, are you knowingly posting false information?
You are Wrong. It ended in June 1958. See Wikipedia
"mutinies and civilian rebellions largely in the upper Gangetic plain and central India, with the major hostilities confined to present-day Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, northern Madhya Pradesh, and the Delhi region.[3] The rebellion posed a considerable threat to Company power in that region,[4] and was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. --- Wikipedia"
THe NI mutiny ended in June 1858 where as "some" sepoys in Vellore (not the entire or substantial regiment) revolted in November 1858. It is unrelated to the NI mutiny.

Meanwhile, the Frontline article ( written by an eminent professor of history) contradicts your claim that the anti British violence in TN had nothing to do with the anti British violence in North India.Kayalvizhi wrote:>>> The 1857 mutiny spanned the years 1857-1859.Rashmun wrote:The 1857 mutiny spanned the years 1857-1859. Now the Frontline article is written by someone who tries hard to say TN participated in the NI mutiny of 1857. It talks of murmurs, suspicions. It does not give a single incidence where shots were fired during the NI mutiny (1857 to June 1858).

Re: Jayalalitha indicates that she is opposed to BJP
As per the Frontline article thousands of people in TN were getting arrested during 1857 because of anti British activities. The article does not explicitly state that 'shots were fired' but it is reasonable to conclude that some violence must have accompanied the anti British protests.Rashmun wrote:Wikipedia can hardly be the last word for disputes related to history. 100s of people arrested but no one obviously mutinied.
Absolutely no evidence of any shots fired. It is a strange kind of mutiny. A mutiny of murmurs!
