Bangalore Airport named after ....
Kempe Gowda, founder of that city.
That's the way it should be.
Naming airports, dams, subways, etc., in an a$$ kissing fashion after Rajiv Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and other Gandhi-Nehru "luminaries" must end.

Kannadigas seem to have more pride than AP sycophants. Hyd airport should be re-named after PVN by the people of Telangana.

In fact, all such government facilities and public edifices should be named after Indian flowers, trees, birds, animals etc but not after any human being. Instead of Gandhi, a peacock is a better choice. Just because the British had currencies with the royalty and the U.S. with the presidents it doesn't mean we should also tow the line. I am tired of seeing private housing centers named after Karunanidhi, Jayalalitha etc. This is a nationwide problem with statues and such. Sickening.

I agree with the second point, but surely, Kempegowda has been honored enough. Every second thing (bus stands, swimming pools, colleges, hospitals, awards, days) in Bangalore is named after him already. Naming the airport after him as well is just sheer lack of imagination. This is like Mumbai where every thing is named after Shivaji, so people have stopped using the official name altogether.
What was wrong with "Bengaluru International Airport" anyway??

Why is the airport in DC named after Reagan? What did he do for the city?

>>> Madras-Mahabalipuram road sounds even much better.
Weird society.
They should start renaming the villages, cities and roads which are currently named after Islamic tyrants.

Cd,
Reagan was president of Usa and wash dc wad capital of Usa. So naming airport after Reagan is logical.
Rajiv Gandhi was not a particularly successful pm nor did he do anything for hyd. In fact he was rejected by ap in 1984 and he screwed ap in opposition rule. Only reason for ysr to rename hyd airport was to ingratiate himself to the wife of rajiv Gandhi. He was not even popular among common folks.
My vote for hyd airport name would be for pvn(he may not be popular but he did a remarkable job as pm during the economic shift of India) or burgula Ramakrishna rao(first cm of free hyd).

Why should any airport be named after someone? It gets confusing. Why can't it be Hyderabad or Delhi or Bengaluru airport? What is next? Name bus terminals after people?

Naming institutions after founders, donors, significant public figures is a tradition world wide.

But the tradition has been rampant with abuse. Each political party comes up with its own names for buildings, institutions, bridges, streets and such. It's time India abolished the tradition and named them after birds, flowers, fauna etc. If Rajiv Gandhi hadn't been assassinated I wonder how many of these airports, stadiums, buildings and streets would have been named after him. Was he such a remarkable PM?

The second part about rajiv, I expressed.my opinion already. Congress leaders are dependent on Gandhi family, they would not mind naming cities after priyanka.
I agree with your statement on abuse. But all traditions are abused by selfish interests at all times of history. Only a mature society with checks and balances can limit abuses.
Reasons for naming institutions after great public figures are: we pay respect to their contributions, names evoke sentiments of past glory, memory of these past hero's may inspire subsequent generations to greater deeds and it is record of a peoples culture.

Stand corrected. There was a uk pm named Edward heath. I always thought of his name as heathrow and hence the airport name. Did not check my assumption till today. Thanks.

Actually, Rajiv Gandhi was the man behind Indian telecom revolution in the '80s which essentially paved the way for IT off-shoring and made India a force in IT. It actually makes more sense to name the airport of Indian Silicon valley after him.

then the airport should be named after sanjay Gandhi who pushed his mother to start maruti . that is the first draw of blood for change in India. one can make all kinds of absurd claims to support one's partisan activities. however such claims will fall short of logical justification.

Why is it illogical? Telecom is the backbone of most off-shoring operations.

Good point. It was only under his leadership that congress was rejected by AP voters.
