Was it a common theme of the times? Was it lost as invasions brought in different culture? Was it lost due to ever changing society over 1000 years?

This is very interesting and amazing. What our ancestors thought were important for society - proper administration, enforcement of rules, people ownership, education and water.

As this was related to a Vedic college, the qualifications required mastery of the Vedas. For instance, the incumbent could not be a native of that village but one who came from other regions. It was believed that the teacher from the same village might take things easy and not do full justice to his profession.
>>>This rule is very similar to what goes on in American universities. They do not hire as faculty members people who graduated from the same school.
I wish Dr. Nagasamy had provided the translation of each and every inscription in order.
Thank GOD TN somewhat escaped Islamic invasion. Otherwise we would not be having this temple as a testament to the glory of Tamil civilization.

The professor gets no tenure and has to take an exam every 3 years before reappointment. No one will get into academics if these rules are enforced even in the US. They tried that in Berkeley sometime back with disastrous results, and also at the new gulf Coast university (think @ Pensacola) and it has been a disaster.
The interesting one is on the "ENFORCEMENT" of rules.
