Re: Quiz
Only 2 senior politicians come to mind - Indira Gandhi & Lalu Prasad Yadav. Indira Gandhi was convicted for election fraud and Lalu was convicted for many things but his fodder scam sticks out prominently.
I don't know if Indira actually spent time in jail (not counting pre-independence), but Lalu seems to have had an outiing because his wife served as his placeholder when some little thing called "law" prevented him from serving in office.

Re: Quiz
Indira Gandhi was convicted of electoral malpractice, but she was acquitted of bribery in the same case. So her election as an MP was nullified by the court, but she wasn't sentenced to jail time.
Lalu Yadav has spent time in judicial custody / remand, but he has not been convicted or sentenced to jail time.
There was someone else who was more shameless than both Indira and Lalu.

Re: Quiz
I wonder if one rank politicians by shamelessness. They are all equally shameless:-)

Re: Quiz
Fair enough... I guess I should say the person I have in mind had an even more cut-and-dried case of corruption than these two.

Re: Quiz
Nope, even before the Indira Gandhi case. His party made a big show of expelling him when he got convicted, but next election they gave the ticket to his son. The son went on to become a more powerful (and just as corrupt) senior pol.indophile wrote:Presently in office?
The ironic thing is none of them got convicted / sentenced to jail.indophile wrote:-- at State level? ---- Many many (JJ, MK, Chenna Reddy, Deve Gowda, the guy in Chattisghar or Jhadkhand, etc.etc.

You are right...there was a politician in the 50s who was convicted and jailed on corruption charges. Name skips my mind...and dont want to cheat googling. I thought he was from Punjab...
Irony that almost all these politicians have done an OJ on the people of India.

He was from Madhya Pradesh. He was Rao Shiv Bahadur Singh, the illustrious father of Arjun Singh, the late Union cabinet minister known for his loyalty to the Royal Family. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rao_Shiv_Bahadur_SinghMarathadi-Saamiyaar wrote:You are right...there was a politician in the 50s who was convicted and jailed on corruption charges. He took a bribe of Rs. 25,000 from a businessman for a license and was sentenced to three years in jail. He appealed on technical grounds, but never contested the fact that he took a bribe. Congress made a show of expelling him, but made Arjun Singh their candidate in the 1957 elections.
Answer to bonus question: Diggy Raja is a relation of Arjun Singh who was also his political mentor.

I don't think so. I thought Jayaprada was married to an already-married film industry guy.indophile wrote:Is Arjun Singh the husband of movie star Jayaprada?

Oh! I thought she married an influential political guy named Singh (not a sardarji, however).
