The Congress on Thursday released an old clipping that shows Bharataiya Janata Party leader Uma Bharti calling the outfit’s prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi ‘vinash purush’ (a man who causes destruction).

Bharti is believed to have made the comment when she was not associated with the BJP and had floated her Bharatiya Janshakti Party.

“Gujarat is a fear-stricken state, which is Narendra Modi’s doing. Modi is not a ‘vikas purush’ (a man who ensures development), but a ‘vinas purush’.

He has caused destruction in Gujarat,” the video shows Bharti as saying. The video also shows Bharti criticising the development claims of Modi Gujarat.

“I have never seen such fear in Gujarat… Media has created a hype around Modi who is being shown as a big man,” Bharti adds in the video.

his is not the only instance of Bharti attacking the Gujarat chief minister. Earlier this month, she had said Modi is "not a good orator" and people go to his rallies to show support rather than listen to him.

“Have you heard Modi making speeches? Atal Bihari Vajpayee is the best orator of our party. Nobody equals his oratory skills in Indian politics," she said.

Bharti has had a bumpy ride with the BJP. Her outburst in 2004 against senior BJP leader LK Advani had strained her ties with the saffron party, eventually resulting in her expulsion in 2005 for indiscipline. She returned to the BJP six years later.

The firebrand leader also had a recent run-in with the party leadership as she was forced to contest from Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh instead of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. The party reportedly tried to field her against Congress president Sonia Gandhi in Amethi later. But she did not accept the offer.
