Dos and Don'ts for visiting parents
A 57-year-old Indian man has been partially paralysed in the US when a police officer forced him on ground after receiving report of a "suspicious person" looking into the garages of several homes.
Sureshbhai Patel had come to the US two weeks ago to stay with his son in a suburb of Huntsville, Alabama.
Last week, while walking down the sidewalk in the neighbourhood he was stopped by the police. Since he did not know English, he was unable to respond to the questions asked by police except for saying "no English" and in between he put his hand in one of his pockets.
The policeman on duty forced him on the ground, injuring Patel, who is now partly paralysed and undergoing treatment in a hospital.
The policeman responsible for injuring Patel has been sent on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.

It might be a good idea for kids to have a talk with (visiting parents) about American culture, peculiarities so they don't get into a sad situation like this.

Per one of our resident experts, this sort of stuff is bound to happen when police force is demonized. I'm pretty sure that none of this would've happened had he been a non-english speaking white European.Beatrix Kiddo wrote:terrible

ya this video was hyperlinked in the link i posted; and the 911 call too.
i think since he didn't know English, he was trying to walk towards his son's house so that the police could follow him and do his identification.
the weirdest thing is, he said no english, the other cop is also telling the cop that he can't understand english, he was still trying to 'warn' him.

Oh! I missed that. It is very sad but consistent with trigger-happy law enforcement (of late). Like many commenters pointed out, these guys made up their mind (and profiled) before even they saw him based on a pitiful paranoid sad creature's phone call; had he reached into his pocket to show his ID or something, he most likely would've met the fate of that Ferguson guy; these days dark-skinned = a thug. The other day someone rang my door bell around 11pm and ran away, I didn't even bother calling the cops.Beatrix Kiddo wrote:confuzzled dude wrote:Here is a another video that captured the whole incident.

It might have been a good idea for the son to give his father something that explained who he was and what his contact information was, since dad didn't speak English. How could anyone expect someone in a small community to speak dad's language. What would have happened if dad had had a medical emergency?

right, land of the free, home of the brave, and all that. Carry a sign that says "I walk on sidewalks, please don't beat me into a bloody pulp."
