9/11 made America self-destruct
-> Really, a very candid perspective. Hats off.
"Did Osama bin Laden envision such a thing when he plotted the attacks?
Probably not. He might have imagined that we would retaliate, and this
would cost us lives and treasure. But he couldn’t have known that we
eventually would lose our common sense of who we are. This has been the
big surprise of 9/11 — an ongoing, self-perpetuating act of American
self-destruction."

Bin laden and Al Qaida achieved more than what they hoped for with 9/11. They wanted to break the economic superiority of US and they did. The two wars over the span of 10yrs has severly bankrupted America. The economy is in shambles now and don't know how long US will be able to hold on to its super power status.
I'm glad Bin Laden was killed before the 10th anniversary.

>>>> This would have happened with or without Osama; to wit, the Mortgage Backed Sec fiasco. It is however true Osama indirectly caused much more ruin than he planned, thanks to the sucking out of money from the system to fight wars with no end in sight. You can also throw in the stupidity of outsourcing that effort to Pakistan vis a vis Afghanistan, into the mix. The fun never stops with our pols.

That's great point Kris. Don't think very many Americans have come to grips with that fact yet.

American foreign policy can never be accused of being nuanced or the general populace of having awareness of the outside world, to question the establishment on this count. Everything is hunky dory when you are fat and happy and are the sole superpower, but things have come to a head with globalization. The general population, much less the beltway geniuses, is only vaguely aware of this paradigm shift and so, the show will go on..

I wish she had done a better job of articulating what the problem was. If "hate, fear, anger and resentment" is the problem, she is just plain wrong that 9/11 triggered all that. There was a lot more hate, fear, anger and resentment in the political discourse in the 19th century than there is now. Rush Limbaugh was at his game in the '90s when the Clintons were in the White House. It is just the really bad state of the economy that exacerbates political tensions. And 9/11 had little to do with that economic collapse.confuzzled dude wrote:-> Really, a very candid perspective. Hats off.

bin laden did not break the economic superiority of the US. the fast and loose credit markets and homeowners who used their homes as ATMs did that. the guys who spun US homeowner debt into fragmented and unrecognizable derivative securities did that.

That's right... the impact of the post-9/11 wars on US economic might is peripheral at best. Even there, more than half of the impact is from Iraq, which had nothing to do with 9/11.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:kinnera wrote:Bin laden and Al Qaida achieved more than what they hoped for with 9/11. Isn't that self-destruction? Iraq war may not have anything to do with 9/11 but certainly would not have been approved if there was no 9/11.
