Sir Humphrey Appleby explains Brexit Empty Re: Sir Humphrey Appleby explains Brexit

Brexit: tragedy or comedy? For most people waking up this morning to the news that Britain has voted to leave the EU, it's inevitably a bit of both.

Which is why, perhaps, a very old, very cynical clip from 1980s political comedy Yes, Minister is currently doing the rounds on social media.

In the episode The Writing on the Wall, Permanent Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby patiently explains to minister Jim Hacker precisely why Britain has such a vexed relationship with the EU.

"Minister, Britain has had the same foreign policy objective for at least the last five hundred years: to create a disunited Europe," he says. "In that cause we have fought with the Dutch against the Spanish, with the Germans against the French, with the French and Italians against the Germans, and with the French against the Germans and Italians. Divide and rule, you see. Why should we change now, when it's worked so well?"

Why is this relevant to today's result? Well...

"We had to break the whole thing up, so we had to get inside. We tried to break it up from the outside, but that wouldn't work. Now that we're inside we can make a complete pig's breakfast of the whole thing."

Breakfast is served.

No surprise, none at all - deluded imperialists still living in the past and perfect colonials celebrating it, standing up in attention singing hail to the queen.

sadly, more than 75% of the 18-24 age group voted to stay in. a whole generation has been robbed.

3 of my college mates live in the UK and all of them voted for Bremain. One had jokingly said couple days ago that he would leave Britain and move to the US if Brexit happens. Now they are all shell shocked that the unthinkable has happened.
