Re: SG: India’s Common Thread
I disagree with him. What does he mean by cultural fabric? How does it bind all Indians together? The fact is India was several kingdoms and feifdoms existing independently for centuries before the Mughal invasion and the British rule. Now it is the constitution that binds Indians together, not an abstract idea of cultural fabric. Aside, why doesn't he let the bell ring?

REALLY. Read this
HARIDWAR: A statue of renowned Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar, which was installed near Shankaracharya Chowk here on Tuesday night, was stopped from being unveiled on Wednesday by agitating local ascetics who had earlier prevented it from being installed near Har ki Pauri on the banks of the Ganga.
The sadhus agitated for the whole of Tuesday night, compelling the administration to shift the statue to the nearby Dam Kothi guest house at about 4am on Wednesday.

The idea of having the renowned poet's statue installed on the banks of the Ganga near Har Ki Pauri was mooted before the Ganga Sabha by then BJP Rajya Sabha member Tarun Vijay, who offered to pay for the expenses from his MPLAD fund.
However, the project had been opposed by the Ganga Sabha and Akhil Bharatiya Teerth Purohit Mahasabha, another body of priests in Haridwar. "If one such statue is allowed to be installed, there will be a number of others queuing up for it, for so many other people and organisations will insist on having statues of their choice put on the Ganga banks," Ganga Sabha office bearers argued.
"Ganga is a goddess herself. Why have other gods or great men on her banks?" said Ganga Sabha president Purushottam Sharma Gandhiwadi.

Rashmun,
Why don't you post the full news?
Hindians opposed it saying that "if one such statue is allowed to be installed, there will be a number of others queuing up for it". So the location was moved to Shankaracharya Chowk. It has a statue of Adi Shankaracharya. So let is install Thiruvalluvar too. But some Hindians opposed it again that with there was no need for a statue of "someone else". So the installation was stopped.
Hindians do not want Tamil poet statue in north.
So much for synthesis.
