Re: The Unifying Role of Indian Music
venkatamakhin is probably the most important figure in indian music because he organized the meLakarthA scheme from which all scalar material in both genres can be derived. the hindustani thAta scheme is but a miniscule subset of the larger and complete meLakarthA scheme.

the writer of the article whose link i gave is a tamilian. there is no reason for him to be biased towards north indians. but he says:
The ‘Natya Shastra’ of Bharata and the ‘Sangita Ratnakara’ of Sarngadeva still continue as authorities for the theory of Indian music and commentators on these and other treatises hailed from Kashmir in the North to Tamil Nadu in the South and from Gujarat and Rajasthan in the West to Mithila and Bengal in the East. The theory part remained surprisingly intact which made the continuity of Indian music possible. Every treatise on music written before the twentieth century mentions only one variety of classical music.
--> This Sanrngadeva is definitely a kashmiri (although he was born and brought up in south india since his grandfather had immigrated to South India) because he identifies himself as a kashmiri in his writings. there is some mystery about Bharata Muni's origin, but there are various experts on this subject (both from the south and the north) who believe he was a kashmiri as well.
--> are you claiming that Venkatamakhin should be considered a greater theoretician in the field of Indian music than either Bharata Muni or Sarngadeva?

Re: The Unifying Role of Indian Music
yes. he recognized the combinatorial basis for organizing the scalar material.
