Al Jazeera was vocally supportive of the Arab spring revolutions in the region. Without it, Mubarak would still be in power today. They have been driving a pan-Arabic conversation about political and social issues that worries the autocratic leaders of the region.
Qatar itself is no haven for democracy or free speech, though. The emir and his family are in no rush to give up power, they just want to get more power in the region thanks to the gas wealth that came to them in the last decade or so.

Actually if you read the article, you would havevread;
Al Jazeera Arabic (which is run separately from Al Jazeera English) has also got a reputation for supporting the Muslim Brotherhood. Hugh Miles, the author of "The Al Jazeera Effect," compared the network to Fox News, telling the Telegraph that "Al Jazeera Arabic is very partisan and it supports Islamists. I think that's a defensible position because there are lots of Islamists and it's a popular view in many parts of the world. It's not accepted by other Arab countries, which regard it as seditious and threatening, but they offer another perspective."

The one other thing Al Jazeera did which I appreciated was show the effect on the human toll of the wars in south Asia and the middle east. American network and cable news with rare exceptions by CNN never showed this and continue to do so.
