Evolutionary biologists thought our species was the first to master fire -- the very first technology used by humans -- and thereby make its own destiny. New research shows that an earlier species -- Homo erectus -- tamed fire many thousands of years before the first Homo sapiens walked on earth. It may well be that this first technology actually led to the natural evolution of Homo sapiens; if true, this increases the relevance of agni to the human story.
