Hungary - Hungarian President Pal Schmitt resigned Monday amid a national scandal that came to a head last week when his doctorate was revoked for plagiarism (CBC News). Schmitt, who was elected to his largely ceremonial office in 2010 for a five-year term, said in a speech to the national legislature that he was stepping down because the controversy is dividing Hungary.

Hillllllllarious....

Imagine what might have happened if this had occurred in India:

1) The VC of the University would have apologized and resigned
2) partymen would have protested and Hartals would have been called.
3) president's OWN University would have conferred a "Honorary doctorate" and promptly claimed that this degree was much better than his "earned" PhD.
4) Doctorates of many opposition leaders would have been withdrawn (even if they were honorary doctorates)
5) A committee would have been formed which would find fault with the president's thesis committee and revoked their PhDs, jailing them in the process.

Of course the president would have offered his/her resignation only to Dr. Sonia Gandhi.
