Wednesday Trivia # 28
i am substituting for blabberwock today for the high priestess is feeling sleepy. (note to self: do not login to chat on july 4.)
as usual, do not google. remember, "self" is watching. blabberwock is barred from attempting questions 1, 2 and 3.
1) hiuen tsang, fa hien and i tsing were chinese scholars who travelled to india to learn and translate buddhist texts. likewise, there were monks and scholars that travelled to china to translate buddhist scriptures into chinese and preach buddhism. lokasema was one; he was from a province that is no longer in india now, gandhara. kumarajiva was another; he was from a kahmiri hindu family. an shigao was yet another from a province that is not in india. his story is interesting inasmuch as he was, like buddha, a prince, who forsook his claim to the throne (by some accounts after coronation) to devote the rest of his life to the teaching of buddhism and translation of buddhist texts in the courts of the han dynasty. he was honoured by the chinese with the title of bodhisatva and is credited with the distinction of being the first translator of buddhist texts into chinese. he is known only by his chinese name, an shigao. which province or kingdom was he from?
2) in the naya paisa series of coins in independent india, there is only one coin that is 11 sided (and is still in production). other than the one paisa coin, there was only one more denomination that was square in shape -- they are no longer in production. name the denominations of the 11 sided and the square coins.
3) this famous mathematician proved a seminal theory in mathematics. his proof came under attack by scholars and laymen alike for its sheer simplicity and counterintuitiveness. this mathematician used to turn to philosophy whenever depressed and would work to forward his theory that shakespeare's plays were in fact written by francis bacon.
4) Given is the picture of the earliest national flag of India designed in 1905. it shows the vajra (the celebrated weapon of lord indra) as its emblem and proclaims "vande mataram" in bengali script. Who designed this flag?
5) of what caste were the satvahana kings?
6) the eastern and western ghats of india meet at which hills/mountains?
7) there is evidence that kerala had sea links with the indus valley civilization and the mediterranean as far back as in 3000 BC. various motifs of IVC have been discovered in kerala in 2009 (which iravatham mahadevan calls a "major discovery"). like in IVC, there is evidence that a a burial system was in practise in kerala then. what is peculiar is that there exist dolmens in kerala dating to the megalithic period. not much is known about the significance of dolmens -- found throughout europe and parts of asia -- except that they had some connection with graves. attached is a picture of a dolmen from kerala. what are these dolmens in kerala now called in malayalam?
8 ) which indian ruler introduced the festival of 'nishat afroz jashan' as a substitute for the persian festival 'navroz'?
9) which is the only widely spoken dravidian language of india that has not been declared classical by the govt. of india?
10) as per the indian constitution, who, if anyone, does the president tender his resignation to?

good try. i meant 11-gonal (pentagonal, hexagonal, 11-gonal) not scalloped coins. 10 paise was a scalloped 12 sided coin.

It seems the Ayotollahs banned Nowroz in Iran. Iranians told them to shove that edict you know where.
Same with Baisakhi. Pakistani mullahs banned it as unislamic but the people showed them the madhyammanguli, and still continue to fly kites and engage in other revelry that day.

Huzefa Kapasi wrote:only one question remains unanwered now:7) there is evidence that kerala had sea links with the indus valley
civilization and the mediterranean as far back as in 3000 BC. various
motifs of IVC have been discovered in kerala in 2009 (which iravatham
mahadevan calls a "major discovery"). like in IVC, there is evidence
that a a burial system was in practise in kerala then. what is peculiar
is that there exist dolmens in kerala dating to the megalithic period.
not much is known about the significance of dolmens -- found throughout
europe and parts of asia -- except that they had some connection with
graves. attached is a picture of a dolmen from kerala. what are these
dolmens in kerala now called in malayalam?

the answer is kudakkallu (umbrella stone).
all questions have been answered.
