Looks like the youngsters are no longer interested in classical music. So, AIR is cutting down on Carnatic music! As people become more and more fashion-secular, they will start forgetting who MS is. India is shining!

The more interesting news is - what programs are replacing classical music? Pretty soon they may dump the National Program too. One silver lining is that Sri Venkateswara Bhakti Channel (SVBC TV channel) is conducting a classical music competition centered on "manodharma" (aalaapana, neravu, swara-kalpana, bhaava-prakatana etc.) The program is aired on Sundays at 8:00 or 9:00 PM. The competition is only for youngsters (i.e., 16 to 25 yr old) only. Some of the contestants, especially from Madras, Bangalore, Vizag, and Kerala are so good, you can't believe it. They can sing anything from anywhere with total command, it looked like. There are two judges - M. Sudhakar and Venna Gayatri. The judges occasionally interrupt asking that the contestant do a grahabhedam, different yatis on swaras etc., and give good tips to each contestant on how to improve at the end. I recommend you watch that program. Watchers learn a lot too.

why does AIR chennai have to get permission from delhi to decide what to do with its local programming?

Unlike NPR where the stations usually raise funds locally, AIR Chennai is funded from the Capital city. Maybe you should complain to Trollus Fishyeyeus.
