Tinker tailor soldier spy
Did anyone actually watch the movie and follow it on first viewing without ever reading the book? I read the book like 22 yrs ago and forgot most of it...the movie is so intractely crafted that its hard to get what's going on fully...Ned to borrow the book frm library and read again....love me spy thrillers, they're the best when they aren't badly made shoot'em ups with bombastic CIA characters

I watched it twice. Got most of it on first viewing but second time helped. Never read the book.

it is hard if you haven't read the book and does require a couple of viewings. i think compressing everything into 2 hours was not easy.
the BBC adaptation with Alec Guinness is very nicely done.

Re: Tinker tailor soldier spy
I read almost all of le carre's books, even the dense, unreadable ones and hated just one book - the little drummer girl, which is ant Israel- Palestinian conflict...that whole area with its nasty inhabitants turns me off for some reason. Watching this movie is building a hankering for the Karla trilogy and other Cold War works by le carre

Re: Tinker tailor soldier spy
After watching the movie, I got intrigued by Le Carre's work. I added Tinker Tailor to my reading list, but haven't gotten to it yet. I used to read Frederick Forsyth et al in college, but Le Carre certainly seems to be at a superior level.

Re: Tinker tailor soldier spy
Oh yeah...le carre is vastly superior prose wise and in the complexity of his novels, plot wise...you'll like him much more than Forsyth...Forsyth gets a little too right wing in his later works, le carre is definitely left wing in his world view and sensibilities. I like his prose, only secondary to vs Naipaul among modern british authors, IMO.

Also spy who came in from the cold is the definitive classic and there was a 1960s movie version which was very well made.

The whole Cambridge 5 case was a very interesting case. What was peculiarly interesting is that all 5 (Philby, Maclean, Burgess, Blunt, Caincross) were identified but none of them were imprisoned and all died of natural causes, three of them in russia and two in england. I might write a blog on Philby some day. The following is a brief Philby bibliography for you or anyone else knowing more about Philby:
1. My secret war by Kim Philby (autobiography of Philby)
2. My Five Cambridge Friends by Yuri Modin
3. The Philby Files by Genrikh Borovikh
4. The Master Spy (by Phillip Knightly)
There was also a good BBC television serial on the Cambridge 5 (which does not focus on Cairncross because his involvement was discovered much later).

Re: Tinker tailor soldier spy
Philby and Le Carre were contemporaries in the British Secret service and did not like each other. Le Carre was contemptuous of Philby for his treachery and Philby thought Le Carre was a little dull.

A while back someone presented me the BBC show of this and Smiley's People on DVD. However it was in PAL format but I managed to finish watching this show and plan to watch Smiley's People soon. I am glad that I watched this. Now I plan to watch the movie again.

BBC version rocks!
i haven't watched the movie version. i have watched the BBC versions of both TTSS and smiley's people
do you agree with the following review since you have watched both? he thinks the movie didn't do justice to the story and that's the same feedback i got from someone else who watched both.
Sadly, the other wonderful characters in the BBC series that Le Carré
brought to vivid life become mere cardboard cutouts in the 2011 film.
The slippery Hungarian chief of the Lamplighters, Toby Esterhase; Bill
Hayden, the charming seducer of one and all; insufferably pompous Sir
Percy Alliline; gruff, chain-smoking Roy Bland; and Jim Prideaux,
betrayed on a mission behind the Iron Curtain by the man he loved.
Having grown up in New York's theater world, I've seen many moments
of memorable drama, but none more so than the wonderful scene in the Smiley's People
where Toby Esterhase kidnaps a Soviet diplomat wonderfully played by
the Anglo-French actor Michael Lonsdale. Watching Smiley slowly,
relentlessly deconstruct the blustering Soviet official into a
blubbering mess is one of cinema's supreme scenes.

Re: Tinker tailor soldier spy
The movie is very ambitious in trying to condense the story into 127 minutes of running time. By contrast, the TV show is 315 minutes long. A lot is lost in the movie. So, yes, d'accord!

I am not a particular fan of the detective genre, my favorites are noir, spy thrillers, history for the most part. I used to read Robert Parker, Jeffrey Deaver et al but like James Elroy, Elmore Leonard and the greats from the 60s, 70s and 80s in that genre...spy thrillers my favorite is le care but there are the usual like Len Deighton, Forsyth...

Two and a half episodes down. This moves way faster than TTSS.
