This is atrocious. The poor girl died. The police didn't take her seriously. The news doesn't say anything about where the attacker is, whether he is in custody or not.

Same story in Warangal A.P some 3-4 years ago. The perpetrators were shot dead by the police in an "encounter" within a week of the attack. Some say YSR (the Chief Minister at the time) promised the girl on her death bed that her attackers would be killed.

stalking laws are weak everywhere in the world, including the US. victimizing of helpless and innocents will continue to happen in desh since governance and law enforcement is so weak and victims cannot fight back. those are tough things to manage anywhere but desis take incompetence to another level altogether. The only short term solution would be draconian action such as high profile encounters by police squads, implicitly sanctioned by law enforcement authorities at the top. libs will flail their hands and make noises about 'police state', 'educating' the masses' etc as usual, but that'll happen around the same time as when pigs grow wings in desh.

in the longer term, the best deterrent to such crimes is to arm victims and practice zero tolerance. victimizers in violent crimes do target helpless victims and will be forced to think 10 times if they're sure the victim could be armed. that and the fear of repercussions are the only way these crimes will cease. highminded libs with their opposition to death penalty & individual arming themselves will never have workable solutions, only opposition.

If such a weapon could be used against the victims themselves, then not carrying such weapons will certainly ensure attacks on the victim. it is all a question of reducing the chances as much as possible. If it can force the attacker to think 3 times then such a deterrent is good enough.

What are your alternative suggestions - except "educating" the masses and "strengthening" the law enforcement.

With resources running out, her family took her to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital last month. But within two days she was again moved to the private hospital.

Why did'nt the state governments of TN or Puduchery pay for the victim's treatment at the private hospitals?

I think JJ dropped the ball on this one.

Why do they have to change a serious burn patient to so many hospitals all over the city and state?

are the Apollos and the Escorts only for the rich and the elite?

Typical example of health care nightmare for the non-elite in India.

Kung Fu whatttttttt? Do you know how long it takes for one to get to teh expert level and good enough to defend. Just knowing how to make noises "uuuuuhhaaa, eeehaaa" will not deter an attacker. there are more men who into these than women - now what?

It is scary that most victims of acid attacks in India seldom get justice since the attacker is never prosecuted because of lack of witnesses, and in cases where he is prosecuted, he is often able to get away with a light sentence or simply pay a fine. India apparently is fourth in the world on the incidence of acid attacks.

Here's something worth reading:

Acid attacks are a form of gender-based violence aimed at silencing and controlling women. The venomous intent behind these attacks is clear from the fact that most attacks are directed primarily at the face and result in scarring, deformity and injuries such as blindness. Many of these debilities leaves the victims severely disabled and disfigured, isolating them and driving them underground in the face of ridicule, making it nearly impossible for them to function in society.

A subsequent result of this debilitation is an acute decrease in income for the victims and their families as they are forced to give up work. Even if they recover to the extent that they are fit for employment few employers are willing to hire people with such physical deformities. Most women also find themselves abandoned by their husbands.

The police also often exacerbate the trauma of the victims. As with other gender-based crimes they often side with the perpetrator and attempt to intimidate and harass the victim at the behest of the accused. In one instance, the police instead of arresting the accused ransacked the beauty parlour of the victim, trespassed into her email account and commented on her private affairs.

Similarly, judges overlook the seriousness of the offence and firstly allow bail to the accused when they can further intimidate the victim and secondly give extremely lenient sentences when they are ultimately found guilty. Further displaying insensitivity to the type of offence that has been perpetrated on the victim, the manner in which the judicial system functions results in the conduct of long protracted trials.
